LOST star Michael Emerson recently had an interview where he discusses some spoilers for the rest of Season 4. During the interview, you can hear Emerson trying to do his best to not spill the beans too much by taking an extra second to think before he answers the question, but he still provides us with some minor spoilers.
Most of the info we actually already know, but he does say that the show will move forward, backward and "sideways" in time!? Is he hinting at possible alternate time lines!?
Here is a summary of the spoilers from the interview:
1) Ben has a lot to do in the next few episodes in a lot of "different places"
2) Ben will get some good airtime
3) We move around in time, forward, backward and "sideways"
4) Remaining episodes are violent and gaining speed down hill
5) New characters are very "wicked" and "dangerous" so you will like Ben more because he is not as "bad"
There is a little more to the interview and below is the audio, unfortunately since it is a phone interview the sound quality is not the best, but it is still always good to listen to Emerson.
Metro Editor Will Glover conducts a telephone interview with Michael Emerson, who plays "Ben Linus" on the hit ABC TV series "LOST."

Sideways. WTF?
Maybe thats involving desmond... :S
Oooh, first comment. :P
SIDEWAYS?!
Okay, NOW I'm excited!
A few days ago, I mentioned 'flash sideways' being introduced.
I was joking. I sincerely hope Emerson is doing likewise.
I wouldn't read too much into the sideways comment. He says it very casually. I don't think Emerson would give away something as significant as alternate timelines in an interview. He was misinterpreted quite a few times last season leading to disappointment.
You guys don't understand... He meant that we'll see FB's, FF's, and, probably, scenes with different points of view, just as man of science, man of faith, where we saw the same scene 3 times, but different at the same time. The producers had said over and over again that there is NO time travel, NO alternate realities... "Mind Time Travel" is another thing. But still.
Maybe flashing sideways is traveling in present time from the island to the outside world.
maybe he's hinting at when the oceanic 6 flashforwards become present time then they will 'flash' to the now present island stuff???
Which may be revealed in the finale and used full time in season 5. That would be quite interesting
A few observations..
The word 'loop' really seemed to throw him. Could be a bad line though.
Again, he mentions Ben's extensive globe-trotting. Accompanied by a crypic laugh no less. This is something big. In a recent interview he said viewers will be amazed at how 'well-travelled' Ben is.
It almost makes him sound omnipotent.
To me, time sideways just means we'll see different events taking place at different locations at the same time.
Or Ben starts travelling into other people's flashbacks to fiddle with fate and destiny!
I wish.
Ben's plans are always good to watch :)
ChristiK-
I took it to mean the exact same thing.
Darlton has said they are only interested in paradox-free time-travel. And they also say that what we are seeing will always be truth, meaning no useless alternate realities. The future IS the future. Multiple realities or timelines would be essentially useless, and with so few episodes left in the series, I just don't see that happening.
There is not a such thinkg as "paradox-free time-travel". The very concept of time travel is a Paradox itself. No matter what the producers wants to call it. No matter if Des Mind travels only. Time travel, by definition is a paradox. That's why time travel is not possible in the "real world". Me thinks.
Yeah, you get the impression they use special gloves when including time travel. I think they're not keen on it tbh, even though it's led to two of the greatest episodes.
That laugh is creepier than anything Ben has ever done though :)
Yes, my friend. S03E08 & S04E05 are the two best episodes in the whole show. It's like since Des had centric episodes, all I want from this show is him and Penny to re-unite.
Agreed. The whole Kate-Jack-Sawyer triangle is now tainted since Kate slept with Sawyer. I now don't care what happens there at all because I don't have any respect for Kate's character any more... and that's not a sexist thing, Sawyer is even worse.
Desmond seems like a regular, decent kinda guy. So if the producers kill him or Penny off, it'll be a disaster... there won't be anyone left on the show that I'll care about whether or not they escape to normality.
Long live Desmond!
The sideways can be a fb/ff that we already saw from someone else and now we will see the same one but from another person.
There's no reference to time travel. "Sideways" in time means we'll go off the Island to what's happening with characters like Penny as the conflict with the freighter plays out.
Samus: Nonsense -- there's nothing intrinsically paradoxical about time travel. The Tramalfadorians in Slaughterhouse 5 are basically sightseers in the fourth dimension and create no paradox.
>>The producers had said over and over again that there is NO time travel...<
More nonsense. The writers said this once back in S1 and have renounced it many times since. Face it, there's time travel on the show.
Thanks ODI.
Ummmm is it just me or am I the only one who saw the picture of Ben waving a metal detector on Jack in what appears to be the Sydney Airport?
Did I miss something?
Ben at Sydney Airport was a hallucination Locke had while doing drugs in S03E03 - Further Instructions. Not relevant or real at all.
thanks oyvind for the reminder, my eyes just about fell out when I saw that !!!
I don't know - 'flash sideways' sounds more like a reference to an alternate dimensions/parallel universe
situation. This could be 'THE FROZEN DONKEY WHEEL'
