How Many Episodes of Lost Is Dominic Monaghan Doing?
Production on Lost season six doesn't begin for another few weeks, but thanks to Comic-Con, we're starting to get a sense of the new season, including which castmembers might be back to cavort in those alternate timelines the producers teased.
Which brings us to Dominic Monaghan's beloved Charlie. His appearance on stage as the grand finale of Lost's panel all but confirmed that Mr. Pace would be back for the final season of Lost. But is it true? And if so, how much might we see of him? Here's what we're hearing...
Sources tell us exclusively that, yes, Dom's deal to reappear on Lost is done and that the original castmember is set to appear in three episodes in season six.
No word yet on the answer to the big question: Is Charlie alive? We'll have to wait until Lost returns to ABC in January 2010 to find out.

Sawyer
Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse did announce that Juliet would be returning this season on Lost. When are we going to see you?
Pretty immediately, and then I'm not sure after that, but I think that it will be satisfactory.
Based on the faux commercials they showed at Comic-Con, it seems that things have been reset. Is Juliet going to have a happy life now?
That would be so amazing. It really would, and I think we've all expressed a desire for that, but you know [Damon and Carlton], they're devious. They're devious little genius little guys, so my feeling is that I don't know, but I'm willing to go along for the ride to find out. I would hope after everything that they put her through that she does have a happy life, but it doesn't always work that way.
Does that mean a happy life with Sawyer?
She was pretty happy, huh? That was awesome.
Do you want to see her with Sawyer?
I don't know. I didn't at all, and now I've watched the episodes [from last season], and I've watched him, and he just captivated me. He was so happy, so in some ways I feel, like, "Good for him!" when she's around.
Are you going to be in many episodes, or is V going to affect that possibility?
V doesn't affect it all. Lost is done. They're set in what they're doing. The success or failure of V doesn't in anyway influence Lost. They've had this last season planned for a really long time, so I think that it will be whatever it is. I'm not sure exactly what that is, but I know that it will be enough that they mention me.

Thanks to JonnyV for the heads up. From my knowledge this is the first time we've had confirmation that Alpert and The Others were responsible for the death of Juliet's ex-husband.
Nestor Carbonell on the challenge of playing such a mysterious character: "My first episode was as a recruiter to get Juliet to come to the island. I ended up killing her ex-husband who was stopping her from leaving [for] the island... When I read the material I thought it'd be interesting if I didn't play him - I've got to convince her, so I can't tip her off that I've got some other surreptitious ideas, I've got to be genuine and honest and kind and probably have a good reason for doing this, for killing her ex-husband. So that was always my mantra was just don't play the villain, play him as a human being and to this day I don't really know if he's good or bad or evil or how much of him is good or how much of him is [evil]. Just when I've figured out the character, I open up another script and I say, 'Oh my God, now I'm completely thrown!'"

Season 6
Here are the latest details about Juliet's return, the potential alternate timeline clips, and the potential return of badass Sawyer.
Simon in Boston: Since Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse said Juliet was going to be on Lost this season, do you know when she'll return?
"Pretty immediately, and then I'm not sure after that," Elizabeth Mitchell tells us exclusively. "I think it will be satisfactory." Stay tuned for more from Elizabeth in the coming days.
Marina in Pittsburgh: What's up with this alternative time line stuff that was revealed at Lost's Comic-Con event? Hurley became the CEO of Mr. Cluck's? Kate killed someone else? Oceanic Airlines has never had a crash? Excuse my French, but WTF?
Damon Lindelof asks Lost fans to trust in the writers. We're willing to do that (for now), but we agree the alt time line stuff is superstrange. Our best guess is that instead of resetting the clock to before Oceanic 815, Jack's plan actually changed the course of history at a much earlier point—perhaps beginning in 1977, when we last saw our heroes?
Marie in San Antonio, Calif.: Lost!
We asked Josh Holloway about Sawyer's state of mind following the events of the Lost finale, and he said: "I think he's pretty destroyed. All of that growth got ripped away. I think he's gonna be a bit salty again, which I'm looking forward to. All I know is that he's destroyed and has given up on life again and on having any positive lessons. So watch out!" (We love mature Sawyer, but bitchy Sawyer is damn fun too.)

Thanks to Donna and Marisa for the heads up.
Everyone wants to know how the final season of Lost will wrap up. What can we expect? Executive producer Carlton Cuse says, "The time travel season is over. The flash-forward season is over. We have something different planned." Here are a few clues to what's coming:
Executive producer Damon Lindelof says the final season will address the origin of the food drop from Season 2.
A fake episode of America's Most Wanted was screened for Comi-Con fans showing host John Walsh narrating the true crime story of Kate Austen. Kate, it was revealed, didn't kill her step-father, plumbing company owner Wayne Jannsen, as viewers believed. In his narration, Walsh said, "Fate would intervene on this tragic evening. Having made an earlier date with his wife, Janssen instead sent his apprentice, Ryan Milner, to lock up in his place. As Austen had devised, the building went up in a violent ball of flames. But it was Ryan who would perish inside instead of her intended target. Austen was detained for the murder of Ryan Milner before violently escaping the custody of the U.S. Marshall. She's on the run to this day. Federal authorities consider her armed and very dangerous."
Jorge Garcia believes that bringing Dominic Monaghan out on stage during the Comi-Con panel pretty much confirmed his involvement in Season 6.
Former cast member Adawale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko) was also at Comi-Con promoting his film, "G. I. Joe" and, according to a source, had hoped to hang out backstage with his former co-stars. But that did not happen. Still, Jorge sensed that Adawale got the strongest applause during an In Memorium reel that played, saluting all the slain characters. "He got an incredible cheer," says Jorge. "He definitely stood out."
A promo image for the new season revealed all the show's characters (both dead and alive) lined up in a long row. John Locke is in the center, with his back turned toward us, looking over his shoulder. Josh Holloway told me his thoughts on the placement: "I guess Locke's become Satan. I've really enjoyed his sudden change into becoming the evil guy."
Josh was most excited to hear the news that Elizabeth Mitchell would be back in some way.
"Juliet coming back is exciting," he says. But if Juliet returns only as a corpse, Josh says it would have a horrible effect on Sawyer. "It would destroy him. It would bring him right back to where he started. I love that idea of ripping off all his growth and getting back to Sawyer, the salty dog. But I imagine then he'll have to get back to wanting to live again."
Elizabeth Mitchell has been under a gag order not to speak ever since Lost's season
finale aired in May. But she finally broke her silence with me. "What happened at the very end of the season is they told me that the character of Juliet had reached a natural conclusion," says Liz. "It was very sudden, but I said 'Okay,' thinking that was the end of it. People knew I was available and I got a bunch of scripts. I fell in love with V and said I would do it. It was really crazy because I wasn't planning on jumping back into another series. And then Lost's La Fleur episode
aired and the fan response was really good, so then Lost called again, and that's what I can't talk about. It's possible Juliet's just dead, but I think it's going to be a little bit more than that. I hope that when she comes back she can give Sawyer a really good reason for going on. What I really want is to have a big old fight with Ben, but that will probably never happen. But we will definitely see her again. They haven't really told me how many episodes I'll be doing but ABC said they'd work it out. They did when I was shooting the V pilot. I literally did four days of V, four days of Lost, four days of Vi."
Michael Emerson has spent his hiatus wondering if the character seen sitting next to Jacob on the beach in the season finale will be related to Esau, a character from the Old Testament. "Jacob is like a character of light and goodness and Esau was more earth-bound, more a creature of
the dirt and darkness," Emerson explained to me. "There's biblical themes in our show. Whether they want to establish any direct parallel to Jacob and Esau remains to be seen."
Nestor Carbonell is not surprisingly "thrilled" to be joining the cast as a series regular. "My family and I are moving to Hawaii next week," he told me. "I've been flying back and forth so this is a big thrill for us. I have a 16 out of 18 episode commitment, so I'll be on the island when they need me. They've told me they'll answer the major questions about my character Richard—whether or not I'm immortal, how old I am. Because I don't seem to age." He says he believes his character is connected to the Black Rock pirate ship and perhaps, Ancient Egypt. "I'm most anxious to find out who's pulling the strings on this island."
So are we!!

Lost's Nestor Carbonell (Richard Alpert) will finally be a series regular next season. "I'm moving my whole family to Hawaii next week," Nestor tells me. "This whole time I've been flying back and forth, but now I'll be living on the island with the others. They tell me I'll be in 16 of the 18 episodes." Executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof say his backstory will take a significant time to reveal. Adds the actor: "Obviously Richard doesn't age, so I'm most curious to know how old he is and if he's in fact pulling the strings."

Thanks to Glen for the heads up.
Big news about island-castaway show Lost is breaking over at Comic Con. One of our all time favorites is heading back to the island! Details, and major spoilers, after the jump.
Lost news turned up in an unexpected place this afternoon, at the panel and screening of the CW's new teen vampire soap the Vampire Diaries. Ian Somerhalder, best known as the late great Boone from Lost, plays brooding vampire Damon in the new CW show, and was asked by panel moderator Lynette Rice what being cast on this show would mean for him and Lost, and whether he would be returning for the show's last season.
We were actually talking about it today and... Boone will be coming back to Lost.
Somerhalder offered no other details, but this begs the question of exactly which other season-one characters will be returning to the island for Lost's final season. All that's certain is that Somerhalder is going to need that sun-protection ring his vampire character uses in Vampire Diaries when he gets back to the island.

Update 23:00: Thanks to TVOvermind for this interview with Nestor Carbonell
Update: 22:50 Another recap from Digital Spy
Update 22:50: Thanks to Michael for this awesome summary from a G4 interview with Jorge, Michael Emerson and Nestor.
The G4 hosts set up the introduction with a bit of a background of Lost, Olivia is wearing a Wonder Woman outfit.
Jorge, Michael & Nestor come out together, banter about the Wonder Woman outfit, Olivia wants to know what they think. (I forget the other hosts name but he's holding in his palm the Ben bobble head).
They're asked if its their last comic con experience:
Jorge: (looks over to Michael & Nestor) The last with Lost but I have a feeling that stuff might bring us back in some form or another.
Michael: Yeah now that i've gotten a taste of genre work I think i'll just continue to work in the realm of horror and science fiction and make this a second home.
Host: You have to when you get so many cool toys of yourself.
Olivia asks Michael, "do you have this" they hold up the bobble head.
Michael: No, I don't have one this is the first i've seen it....
They give it to him. (This was all pretty funny).
Then they just get goofy, obvious they're in hush mode.
They start asking questions about S6:
Jorge: We don't know anything about S6, we're pretty confused about S5.
Nestor: I don't know who I am. I struggle with that (Nestor seems oddly nervous or afraid he might divulge something? Maybe he's tired.)
Olivia: Do you try to ask them to tell me something?
Nestor: You ask, and you get a very cryptic answer. Like "yeah you would not be wrong to assume something like that".
They banter about not ever knowing exactly whats going on, Michael is oddly silent in all this.
Segway into:
Host: Alot of characters coming back next season including Charlie, is it gonna be good to have Dominic back?
Jorge: Sure, I think its pretty awesome, I mean I just found out this morning when he came into (??).
Host: Really thats how you found out?
Jorge: Yeah thats how I found out about that. (laughing)
Video of The Incident is being shown here (mostly Jack), Olivia is saying (about Dominic) we saw him yesterday here but he didn't say anything, either Michael or Nestor says something about meeting him at Java Juice and getting all the secrets, someone mentions twitter (its all joking) but they seem to really have not known.
Talk about the Comic Con floor and convention in general, the enormity of it. It's Michaels first time, he says its overwhelming and he wouldn't walk the convention floor.
Now back to the show:
LOL Michael clutches his bobblehead (closeup)
Olivia: Do you know anything, are things going to be solved, will we understand everything...
Nestor & Michael banter here with more video of The Incident in the background (Flocke meeting Richard w/ the boar on his back scene): Basically they say we're not going to get every single mystery of the island, and why would we want to. Smaller mysteries will be left to the imaginations of the viewers.
Michael: I trust our writers, I think it will satisfying and I think it will be an ending for grownups.
Olivia asks why not give all the answers.
Nestor: We want a little bit of mystery, a little bit of mystique left. I think like the bigger picture, who controls the island, the forces in conflict, are they gonna be resolved. And the "why" questions, are they gonna be resolved. Why (looking at Michael) is he so invested in Widmore, wanting to kill him (Michael agrees). The little things, I don't want to know every property of the island and the scientific reasoning of the island.
Host: You want that to be a nerd debate on forums for years and years to come.
Olivia: Has anyone talked about a Lost movie?
Michael: They say no. Thats just rumor.
Host: I say yes. Would you guys be on board for something like that.
Michael: I would like to play Mr. Eko.
More conversation about the show, Michael talks about him being hired as a guest role etc.
The cast of Lost everybody. Applauds.
Update 22:40: Here is the Oceanic Ad (Thanks to qu4d)
And here's the Mr. Cluck's one (thanks to Eko)
Update 22:40: SCI FI Wire write up
Update 22:00: Thanks to buffyfan145 for the heads up on this write up up from Doc Jensen.
Update 21:15: "LOST" producers talk final season
Update: Holloway says Sawyer's leader days are over and Sawyer's state of mind post-Juliet is "destroyed." He will be "salty" and angry again.
1) Parallel with S1 and S6 - DL confirms many characters from season one!
CC: Says there is a way of discovery that they will have in play in S6
2) Faraday confirmed for S6!!
3) Will we see flashbacks to characters' childhood? CC says S6 will be different. CC won't describe what that point of difference is.
4) Richard Alpert's backstory is "involved"
5) DL: Juliet WILL be in final season.
6) Q: Is Man in Black's name "Esau?" Emerson: Might be too literal--but I like the way your mind works.
7) Food drop in S2 finale might be covered... DL: "Something we'll try to address."
8) We won't see much DHARMA in S6
9) Jacob has NOT appeared as another character on the show.
10) Dominic Monaghan appeared on the panel!!!!

Elizabeth Mitchell,
Interviews
Thanks to Donna for the heads up.
There’s this thing about women named Juliet: They’re famous for meeting tragic ends. Elizabeth Mitchell’s character on Lost was no different — after finding unlikely love with Sawyer (Josh Holloway), she sacrificed herself to set off a crucial bomb — but luckily, Mitchell’s career has new life after that death. In addition to a mysterious number of additional episodes she’ll shoot for Lost’s final season, she’ll be seen later this year toplining ABC’s reboot of the alien miniseries V.
At Comic-Con, I talked to the actress about Juliet’s journey, the tumultuous period after she learned of her Lost fate (then had it somewhat revoked), and the alien-hunting yet to come.
Congratulations on the smooth transition between Lost and V.
I know! Who would have thought?
How did it go down? When you were told you’d be coming to an end as a regular on Lost, were you immediately offered V by ABC?
Basically, the two things happened within days of each other, which I was very surprised by. And, of course, the decisions were left to people more powerful than me. [Laughs]
But surely you had some input.
Well, V was actually a very personal choice on my account. It was somewhat brought to me, but it was along the lines of, “Oh, and then there’s this.” But I’ve always loved the idea of playing a female protagonist on a sci-fi show. I just like it — that’s the kind of thing I watch. [Gesturing to her husband, seated nearby] Like, we’re huge Battlestar Galactica fans. I think sci-fi is sexy, I think it’s fun. I love watching procedural shows, but I’m not as fascinated by them — not really at all. Being in them and acting in them is not really my thing, so I realized that if I was gonna do [a TV show] again for a long time, I would want it to be fun and incredibly challenging for me, something I’d have to stretch to reach.
So what’s the stretch for you in V?
First of all, the thing that was really fun about Juliet is how still she was, and how she watched everybody. For three years now, I’ve been in her mindset, which is a really unique and bizarre and kind of wonderful place to be and I’ve loved every minute of it. The character I play now [on V] — which I’ll be doing at the same time as Juliet [in future Lost episodes], which is going to be really interesting — is incredibly intelligent but vulnerable at the same time. Her anger and her emotions are far more forthright than mine or even Juliet’s are. There’s an honesty to the way she does things that’s fascinating.
And I think the idea of my character having a son who’s sixteen is gonna be…I mean, I have a son who’s four, and already, I can’t believe the words that come out of my mouth. There’s a thing about motherhood that I have never had a chance to play, which is weird at 39, right? You would think that I’d have played so many mothers by now. [Her husband interrupts: “You don’t look 39.”] Ah, that’s nice. [“Getting there, though,” he adds, as she laughs.]
Are you happy that you have a role where you can wear different clothes, as opposed to Lost, where you’d wear the same thing for multiple episodes?
I think my mom is happiest about the makeup. She’s like, “You get to wear makeup, you can finally look pretty!”
That can be kind of jarring — it’s like when people from Survivor appear on the reunion show, and you’re like, “Why did you put on all that makeup?”
I always feel that way! What I always enjoyed about Lost is that we’re there with almost no makeup on our face, we’re emotionally naked, we’re sweating, we’re hot, and we’re generally pretty disgusting, and the camera catches it. There’s a certain beauty to seeing people the way they are.
Even before this last season of Lost, you talked about how you thought Juliet would probably have a tragic ending.
Yeah, I always figured that she would. I actually had thought that she would end up doing something terrible, but then as it went on, I kind of thought she would end up doing something incredibly noble, which is what she did by sacrificing herself. The character was insanely complex and insanely fun. As she started going more in one direction, I thought, “Well, obviously this is going to come to its natural conclusion.”
Do you mean she finally became happy, and that never lasts long in Lost?
Yeah! Happy and not as complex, do you know what I mean? She and Sawyer had found this kind of peace that I fought very hard against and Josh fought very hard against, and we were so wrong, which is really nice. When I watched it, I liked it, and I don’t usually like anything I do.
Why didn’t you think it would work?
Well, I had always liked Sawyer with Kate! I mean, not to be a fangirl — which I am — but I just really actually liked them together. I liked their chemistry, their passion. What I didn’t anticipate is how Josh would play it and how he made it so honest and so happy and so real. When I was watching him, I was like, “That’s why that relationship works.”
Were you worried about incurring the wrath of your fellow fangirls?
I mean, I came on the show incurring that. I immediately hooked up with Jack and they were like, “Uhhh, no!” [Laughs] So I wasn’t as worried about that — I think as an actor, if you’re worried too much about people liking you, then you don’t really get to play the character so much. It’s not that it’s not great when people do like you or love the character or any of those things — it’s the most amazing thing ever to have that — but if I went into it thinking something like that, I don’t think I could have done it.
This year, though, the fan approval for your character and her relationship with Sawyer seemed to shoot through the roof.
Yeah, it was surprising.
Do you think it’s partially because audiences started trusting Juliet? During your first two seasons, it never seemed like she laid all her cards on the table, but this year, she felt complete.
We finally felt like we kind of knew everything [about her]. Every time something would come up before, she always had a wealth of new information and you kind of got the feeling that she shared it when she needed to.
On a show like Lost, was it a nice thing to think, “Oh, I think I finally know everything important there is to know about my character?”
I think I didn’t, because I have this crazy active and oddly weird little mind that tries to find all the wiggle room in places, so I think that I was still going through all the ways that things could be more complicated than it was. And when it turned out to be very simple, I was very happy. I was happy watching it more than I was playing it.
It’s funny that you began your tenure on the show sharing scenes almost exclusively with Matthew Fox and Michael Emerson, and you finished by sharing them almost solely with Josh Holloway.
I was very, very sad — and I hope that it’s rectified — that I didn’t have a final scene with Michael Emerson. I thought that built to a crescendo that then just died. There was a reason for that, but as an actor, that was hard for me because I just loved him so much. The same thing happened with Jack and Juliet — they got to a certain point and then they disappeared. But I love the fact that [the writers] do their thing and kind of just write whatever they want. It’s great.
Obviously, when you started shooting V before the season finale of Lost aired, speculation began that Juliet would be killed off — so much so that you were being officially billed as a “special guest star” in V, even though ABC has now confirmed you play the lead. Were there machinations involved to try to keep all that secret?
There were some machinations, but the thing that’s so fantastic about Lost is that they tend to keep things mysterious. I mean, I literally don’t know what’s going to happen and no one else does, and that’s what’s fun about it. As an actor, they asked us to sign all this confidentiality stuff and I don’t think we ever did, so it really comes down to the moral question of, “Who are you loyal to?” And where I’m finally loyal to always is the work. It’s more fun for me when people don’t know what’s going to happen.
I mean, the thing about Lost is that you may say, “Well, Elizabeth’s on V now, so we’ll never see her on Lost again,” but that’s probably not the case. As it is, it’s a complete surprise, and anything that happens further on in the series is a complete surprise, and I wanted that to be the case. When Lost is over and V is over, then we’ll have to have a big chatfest and talk about everything and that’ll be great, but for now, I was very happy that no one was saying anything one way or the other. One thing happened with Lost, and then another thing happened with V, and then something [else] happened with Lost…
You mean, they came back to negotiate for additional episodes after you booked V?
It’s been a rollercoaster, yes.
So originally, you didn’t know you’d be coming back to Lost?
I didn’t know what was going to happen. They also said that they didn’t know either, at the time. It happened in three weeks, it was just crazy…When V came up and everything happened that happened, it was at the very, very end [of the season]. No warning, kinda. [Laughs]
When you do your additional episodes next year, you won’t be a regular anymore, which means that these scripts will sort of exist in a context-less vacuum for you. Are you afraid that you won’t have any idea where your scenes fit into Lost lore when you film them?
No, I trust those guys. I trust those guys to write beautifully. The way they write those characters and scenes and emotions, it’s very wise to trust in their words.

Update: 20:00 Thanks to Kyle for the following
These are pics I took in Hawaii in mid-march right before the S5 finale was being filmed. I figued the stand was for the end of that season and was surprised to see it wasn't used. It must be for S6 sometime- probably a flashback then. Anyways, the interesting thing about the stand was that the hole underneath it where the bomb must have been lowered was covered with a cap in the shape of a dharma logo! How did dharma get a hold of it? I've attached some pics.

Your Q&A with Titus Welliver made me even more impatient for Lost's return (as if that were possible). Got any other scoop on the final season? — Meg
MATT: It depends on what you make of the following: TVGuide.com editor Adam Bryant just returned from a trip to Hawaii, and during a tour of Lost filming locations, the wooden structure from which Jughead originally dangled was still erect on Oahu. Keeping in mind that Lost is meticulous about putting away their toys after they are done being used, I ask: Why is a set piece from the 1954 storyline still camera-ready? (ABC had no comment.)

Thanks to Rachel for the heads up.
In this installment of TVGuide.com's Getting Lost video series, we plucked a few reader questions out of the Getting Lost mailbag.
The topics that are addressed:
• Did Matthew Fox and a young Malcolm David Kelley pre-film a scene during Season 1 to be used in the series finale?
• With Emilie de Ravin back as a series regular for the final season, will Claire be alive... or that special Lost kind of dead?
• Has a time slot — or at least a month — been set for Lost's final season premiere?

Thanks to Marisa for the heads up!
The exec producer of Ian Somerhalder’s new CW series, The Vampire Diaries, is close friends with Lost exec producer Damon Lindelof. So when he’s not sucking blood in the South, Ian may reappear on the island as Boone. While apartment hunting in Atlanta, where Diaries shoots, with his new on-screen vampire brother Paul Wesley, Ian tells me, “I’ve heard a little bit about what’s happening this season on Lost, and there’s definitely an avenue they’re going down to bring back a lot of us.”
Any crossover [with] Lost would “only help the success of our show…as long as it’s not screwing up production,” Ian says. So what if Boone, Shannon, Charlie and the rest of Lost’s “living dead” turn out to be vampires? “That would not be good,” says the actor, who currently lives around the corner from Maggie Grace (Shannon) in Venice Beach. “There are already enough vampires flying around the airwaves. If we can keep it at True Blood, Twilight and Vampire Diaries, the world will be better off!”

Season 6
Update: 6th July 21:40 Thanks to Ramsey for the following.
So my pal Matt and I attended the really fun - and a bit emotional at bits where they showed clips like the Oceanic survivors buliding and sailing off on a raft from Season 1 and Desmond finally getting thru to Penny in The Constant.
Anyhow - there was a signing after and all I had on me was a copy of 'Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince' that i'm trying to read before the movie comes out. Carlton & Damon said during the Q&A that JK Rowling's brave announcement that they'll only be 7 Harry Potter books inspired them to make LOST just 6 seasons long. They both signed by book and after a read what Damon wrote inside: ''Locke is VERY simular to Snape!'' Shock! LOL
Update: 6th July Thanks to Deniz who as at the event for sending us his photos.

Hey All,
LOST writers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse along with Director Jack Bender held a Q&A Session in Curzon. Lucky for us, several fans attended and were able to provide us with the details.
We were sent both the audio and a summary, so special thanks to Gob for the audio and my good friend and podcast partner Karen for the heads up about a summary from her friend Matt who was in attendance as well.
NOTE: Since the panel was in some auditorium, the folks in the audience asking questions were much louder than Darlton and Bender, so I tried my best to balance it out. So I hope you all can listen. In case you can't listen or hear the audio too well, the summary is behind the button.
Plus, I have not had a chance to listen to the audio or read the whole summary yet, so I am posting this all here in the spoilers section just in case.
Enjoy!!
Curzon Q&A with Darlton and Jack Bender
1) D&C confirmed that Stranger In A Strange Land was the turning point for the studio, and they were allowed to establish an end date.
2) Jack’s beard is bad.
3) 16 episodes next year, but 18 hours of Lost. Jack Bender confirmed a two hour season premiere, and a two hour finale.
4) After Lost, they will go in to hiding for a while, due to the inevitably interpretive quality to the series ending.
Damon: You are married to your destiny, you can try to avoid it, but it will catch up to you. This is why Charlie shut the door in the Looking Glass station, because he embraced his death.
Sometimes they get pointers from the studio, telling them stuff is too outlandish. Originally, in the season four premiere, Hurley was going to come across himself in Jacob’s cabin, but the network urged them to change the scene to Christian Shepherd, afraid it would set a precedent of weirdness. With season six, there won’t be any of that
Questions:
Q: What was your favorite scene to watch or write?
CC: The scoring session we attended for the raft’s launch at the end of Exodus . These musicians were playing this incredible music without having rehearsed it, and the moment was so beautiful, there were tears in the control booth. That was just one of those great moments where you felt this blessed synergy of all these talented collaborators all come together and make Lost what it is.
JB: I love all of them
DL: I have many...but for me, during season one, when we first started writing the show coming out of the pilot, when it first started revealing itself, was really cool. I’m drawn to scenes that take place with just two characters and somehow they’re talking about very very heady things and I’m a huge fan of whenever Jack and Locke talk to each other. We’ve been very judicious in having those guys talk to each other, it happens very rarely. I go back back to White Rabbit and that 6 or 7 minute long scene where they’re just sitting in the jungle and Jack says he’s following the impossible and Locke says what if it’s not impossible and we were all put here for a reason, and that scene is the genesis for those guys’ relationship and if you think about how that was the 3rd episode shot out of the pilot, here we are now, 100 episodes later, and now Jack is finally saying ‘Y’know, Locke might be onto something’
CC: Jack’s kinda slow.
DL: It had to permeate through his beard
Q: My wife is fascinated with the artistry of delivering this idea into a script. We had, in a video podcast last year, a glimpse into the writers’ room and she’s fascinated that you get the idea and put it into a script
CC: We have a call centre in Delhi. We just ask them ‘we need a flashforward this week’
DL: We have a minicamp before we write, where we just discuss the season with the writers, the character arcs and we decide on the season’s final image so we know exactly our beginning and where we’re trying to get to. Once we start writing the show on a week-to-week episode basis it gets a bit more intense
CC: We spend a lot of time breaking each aspect of the story and once we have the story worked out from beginning to end, we’ll put it up on whiteboard and then pitch it back to ourselves, and we’ll have scenes in different colours, withan on island story, an off island story, and a C-story, split it into six acts for the commercial breaks and structure it so you’ll wanna come back after each act. Then we’ll give it to some writers to rewrite and send back, and we’ll give our notes, make some changes
Q: Jack was originally a protagonist for the show, but he seems to have gotten more antagonistic as it goes on. Was this intentional?
JB: Matthew Fox loved the idea of wearing the not so flattering jumpsuits and his character beginning to let go of his heroic side, which people accuse me of, taking Jack Shepherd’s character.
DL: Basically Jack spent a hundred hours majorly rejecting it, there was no purpose whatsoever to the island and now he’s come back in the 70s and he’s still waiting to be told ‘Here’s what you’re supposed to do’ and then when he is told what to do, he then gets to decide what he is going to do, so basically it’s contingent on what he feels his mission is.
Q: Can we get more Lost screening where you project episodes in a cinema like this?
CC: I think so. It’s a good idea and it may happen in some form or other
Q: On the official website, there was a video of behind the scenes and you went into your offices and you had a wall of whose dead and whose alive, I want to know about Claire being on the wall of dead
[shocked gasps from audience]
DL: Are you absolutely sure
Q: I am
DL: [explains wall of alive, dead, undead] Well, uh, if you say you saw her there, I don’t know what to tell you.
JB: I think her agent slipped it in there
DL: She is going to be back on the show.
CC: Eventually all of them will be on the wall of the dead.
Q: My question is about the fate of Lost, because I know it ends with season 6, but do you think because of Bryan Fuller with Pushing Daisies continuing it in a comic book, and I love Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk (Damon’s comic) and with Lost it has a disjointed timeline and it comes together in the end, do you think that you’ll do any spin offs in a comic book form?
DL: We feel that if we hold anything back for the final season of the show, it will be bad. People have come along this far, and they need a conclusion.
Q: You make a lot about the characters searching for their destiny and their purpose, do you feel that you yourselves had a purpose in your own lives being involved in the show, or you’ve learned something about life from doing it?
CC: I think as writers we use the show to explore personal issues, spiritual or otherwise. We’re mainly concerned by how much faith and how much control do you have over your own destiny, something which is very fascinating to us, and obviously season 5 was an exploration of that with the time travel leading to an event at the end of the season, so that is going to be something we’re going to explore a lot on the final season of the show. The writers room is diverse and that diversity gets worked out in the characters.
Q: What’s Brian K. Vaughan like?
DL: Unfortunately he has left for greener pastures. When he first came on the show Jorge Garcia was ecstatic because he’s a huge fan of his work.
Q: Where are exactly are you with season 6?
CC: We are here, and the following Monday we’ll start writing.
JB: Shooting starts August 24th
CC: We’ll work continuously until the middle of April and the show will air sometime between January and February and will finish around May.
Q: I want to know about the end of Lost. Michael Emerson said in an interview this week that he suspects it will be quite bittersweet or melancholy. Is it going to be an upbeat ending or ambiguous? Just any kind of hint to the flavour of the ending.
DL: All of the above. We are aspiring for an ending that is fair. Bittersweet comes with the territory. The ending will be different as for once, we won’t leave you on a cliffhanger. You will stay on the cliff this time.
CC: We hope that if we like it, you will like it.
Q: I was sad Charlie died, but he had to die to give his story credibility. That makes me wonder about John Locke. The fact he is now dead, having hit his lowest ebb...what’s up with that character arc?
CC: We’re not prepared to answer any of those questions here tonight. We feel that the final part of the experience of Lost is that you have this time between to theorise, postulate, agonise.
JB: If the actors really need to know what’s coming ahead, they’ll ask. As an example, Josh Holloway did not know what he was whispering to Kate when he jumped out of the helicopter, and neither did Evangeline Lilly, but the actors sold it so well. Terry O’ Quinn was playing Locke with this dark mysterious quality, unintentionally playing into the ending which he didn’t know. I presented him with the script asking him he wanted to read it and he was sure. He came back after saying ‘I wish I hadn’t read it’
Q: How much do you know about each character’s story, are there any you’re particularly proud of, or not proud of?
DL: When you come up with an idea for a character, and they come into the show, like Eko, who was originally a priest who had a crisis of faith, and we found Adewale in New York, and we basically said we don’t buy that this guy is a priest who has lost his faith, we buy that this guy is a warlord impersonating a priest, and somewhere along the way he’d decide he wasn’t just impersonating a priest, he’d decide to be one. So we’re certainly proud of the way that one worked out, and as for the ones we’re not proud of, we bury alive...or have Michael shoot them.
Q: How do you come up with these amazing twists
CC: A lot of getting yourself to a point where you cry. We have a really brilliant writing staff and that’s part of the DNA of the show now, and that’s a big part of the writer’s room, how we re-route things one way and flip it back another. We love introducing a character in a certain way and then reveal the character to be very different. You know originally Sawyer tested the second lowest after the pilot, and now of course he’s a very heroic version of that character.
Q: Keep the Smoke!
DL: You’ll be seeing the smoke in a probably interesting character in itself
JB: And it will be in the shape of Jack’s beard
Q: Season 5 was hard work watching, with time travel. How are you going to pay that off
DL: We acknowledge with a degree of difficulty. We were ostensibly frightened at first with the time travel story, were basically desperate to get everybody back together again. Time travel is now complete and everybody gets back together in one form or another and we feel that season 6 is a lot like season 1 with its community.
Q&A ended here. The guys signed stuff for the fans. My friend had a copy of Half Blood Prince, Damon signed it saying ‘Locke is VERY similar to Snape!’

“What the hell’s going on with Lost? I don’t think they know. I think from week to week they go, ‘Let’s do this.’ And then someone else says, ‘No, this would be a good idea.’ I love that show, but I don’t think they know what they’re doing.” —Ellen DeGeneres
“I am flattered that Ellen is a fan of our show,” says exec producer Carlton Cuse, who promises Ellen there is a master plan, with some sweet payoffs, if she sticks through the final season. Dominic Monaghan recently had a secret breakfast meeting with producer Damon Lindelof to discuss how he might manage returning to Lost as Charlie. “We would like there to be some visitations from people we’ve loved over time,” Cuse says. Michael Emerson, who plays Ben, confirms, “The final season will resemble the first. I know there are plans for big people we have parted company with to reappear.” But one crucial component from the very first pilot episode will most likely be absent from the reunion: cocreator J.J. Abrams, who tells me he won’t be returning to Hawaii to direct the series finale. “I would selfishly love it,” he says, “but director Jack Bender has been living in Hawaii for years and doing amazing work. For me to come in and direct the finale would be cruel and unusual.”

Michael Emerson Talks About Season 6
Anyways do you have any more Lost scoop? --Erick
Ausiello: May's series finale is going to be a real downer, predicts Michael Emerson. "I don't think Lost will have a happy ending," he confessed to us at the Saturn Awards. "It's the end and I think we are going to start seeing more casualties. I would put money on major characters being killed. I believe it will be a sad ending to the show -- or at least bittersweet. I think it will definitely be a series finale for grownups." Emerson, meanwhile, is still trying to make sense of the season 5 finale. (Join the club!) "I killed Jacob... maybe... probably," he hedged. "It isn't like we haven't seen plenty of other people be killed and somehow come back. And what does it mean if I did kill him? I Who the hell was he anyway? Obviously, Ben wanted a father. So much of our show is about bad fathers. It is one of our biggest themes. And Jacob disappointed in those final moments. And maybe Jacob made it easy for him. Maybe that was all meant to happen. Is it all ordained? Maybe. And for that matter, can Jacob even be killed? Stay tuned is my response."

Elizabeth Mitchell
Thanks to NoOne and Carry for the heads up. FYI: DarkUFO reader Carry is the one who asked the question!
I'm a big fan of Elizabeth Mitchell and can't wait for her to go back to Lost. Do you know when V's 13 episodes will finish shooting? Might Elizabeth be back only for the second half of Lost's final season? — Carry
MATT: Mitchell's V-Lost conflict is not one of just time but space, seeing as V shoots in Vancouver, 6 1/2 hours from Hawaii. That said, V starts production in early August, while Lost doesn't start up again until the end of that month. And now that we know that Lost's final season has been extended to be 18 hours, and there's a slightly better chance that Juliet will spend some QT with her Romeo, Sawyer.
