Thanks to Katniss for the heads up on this little article.
On the Morning Media Menu today, Open Letter Books directorChad W. Post broke some literary news about the upcoming season of Lost.
In a mediabistro.com exclusive, Post revealed a book that will play an role in an upcoming episode of Lost--our first glimpse into the mysterious world of the final season of the show. According to post, episode six will reference Japanese authorShusaku Endo's book, "Deep River"--a novel about four Japanese tourists on a trip to India, interrupted by the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Post also discussed his two specialties: analyzing the countless literary references on the television show Lost and publishing literature in translation. Post blogs about all these subjects at Three Percent.
Here's more from the interview: "They gave me one title. It's coming up in the sixth episode. It's going to feature Shusaku Endo's book, "Deep River." It's a work of Japanese literature, and its published by New Directions. Here's a wiki descriptionabout the book: 'The story traces the journey of four Japanese tourists on a tour to India. Each of these tourists goes to India for different purposes and with different expectations' ... it does seem to have some Lost themes in it."

Update: 1st Feb A big thanks to Dharma_Dave for pulling together as much dialog as he could.
(After reviewing the last scene of the season finale, we are reintroduced to the fade to white LOST logo. After a few seconds, the fade to white blends into clouds and pans back from Jack’s perspective, looking out of his flight 815 window. The opening act takes place on Oceanic flight 815, appearing as it did in the pilot episode. Jack, who has a strange look of an almost déjà vu, begins to feel turbulence as the plane hits a rough patch.)
Cindy: So, how’s the drink?
Jack: Uhh, it’s good…
Cindy: That not a very strong reaction.
Jack: Well, it’s not a very strong drink.
(Cindy hands Jack one bottle of alcohol)
Cindy: Don’t tell anyone.
Jack: It’ll be our secret.
(The plane once again begins to shake as it enters into a stronger air pocket.)
Flight Attendant Over the Intercom: Ladies and gentlemen, the captain has put on the fashion seatbelt sign. Please return to your seats as soon as possible.
Rose: It’s (referring to the turbulence) normal. My husband says the plane wanna say in the air.
Jack: (Laughs) Sounds like a smart man.
Rose: You’d be sure to tell him that when he gets back from the bathroom.
Jack: Well, I’ll keep you company until he does. Don’t worry…
(The plane shakes ferociously, causing Jack to grip on his armrests. After a few seconds, the shaking resides.)
Rose: You can let go now. It’s okay…you can let go. (Referring to Jack holding on to his armrests.)
(Jack let’s go and breaths a sigh of relief.)
Jack: Looks like we made it.
Rose: Yeah, we sure did.
Captain Norris On the Intercom: Sorry about the unexpected bumps, folks, we just hit a pocket of rough air.
(Bernard Returns from the Restroom)
Bernard: Don’t mind being cold. I almost died in the bathroom; I don’t know how much longer these shakes can go on.
Rose: I missed you.
Bernard: I missed you too, honey.
(Jack gets up to go to the restroom. Upon entering, he takes a look at himself in the mirror and notices a strange red spot on his neck. Thinking that it might be bleeding, he dabs it with some toilet paper. On returning to his seat, Desmond is now sitting at the end of his row, which was previously empty.)
Jack: Excuse me.
Desmond: Oh, I’m sorry mate, is this your seat?
Jack: No, no, I’m right there.
Desmond: Oh, alright then.
Desmond: Can I tell you something? How nice of you to keep smiling…
Jack: (Laughs) Yeah, of course.
Desmond: Thanks pal.
(Jack looks at Desmond, and ponders if he had seen him before.)
Desmond: Something wrong?
Jack: No, no. Do I know you from somewhere?
Desmond: (Laughs) I’m not sure. (Introduces himself) Desmond.
Jack: Jack.
Desmond: Nice to meet ya…or to see ya.
(Both laugh)
(The camera then pans back through the window going down until it reaches the ocean below. It then submerges underwater, past a school of fish, showing us what used to be the barracks. After moving past the swings, the camera moves further into the jungle, past the beach, and zooms by a shark. Eventually we arrive at the base of a stone embracement. The camera pans up, revealing the foot of the statue. Boom, cut to LOST.)
Act 2:
(Once again we are given a recap of what took place at the end of last year’s finale. Jack is holding Jughead, and looks at Sawyer who reluctantly shakes his head in agreement that Jack should drop the bomb down the well. After doing so, the electromagnetism increases; Juliet gets caught by a chain and is pulled towards the well. Sawyer grabs ahold of her arm and says, “I got you,” but the force is too strong for either one to hold on. At the bottom of the well, Juliet, who is still alive, sees the bomb and tries to set it off by hitting it with a rock. She succeeds.)
(The scene opens on Kate’s eye. She slowly opens her eyes and sees that she is at the top of a tall tree. Upon nearly falling of the perch she frightened. After struggling back on top of the branch she screams.)
Kate: Help! (Although trying to scream the shout comes out weakly.)
(Kate puts her fingers to her ears, suggesting that her ears are hurting. She then begins the steep descent from the tree. After reaching the ground she again, attempts to get help.)
Kate: Hello? (Immediately grabbing her ears, as they are in pain)
Kate: Hello! (After walking a short distance, a hand is placed on her shoulder)
Miles: Hey! (This greeting scares Kate causing her to push Miles to the ground.)
Miles: Hey! Hey! Hey! It’s me Miles, it’s okay!
Kate: What happened?
Miles: What?!
Kate: Where are we?
Miles: I can’t, I can’t hear you. Are your ears ringing?
(Kate searching the area finds a Dharma logo)
Miles: What is it?
Kate: (Long pause) We’re back.
Miles: Back where?!
(Kate runs around the sign, to reveal the wreckage from the Swan station. The pile does not look like it did after the implosion, but like it would after the incident.)
Kate: Miles.
Miles: Is that the construction site?
Kate: No, that’s the Swan hatch, like we never blown it up.
Miles: Guess where not in 1977, huh?
(Kate notices that behind Miles, Jack and Sawyer are both laying on the ground unconscious.)
Kate: Jack? Jack! Can you hear me, Jack?
Jack: (Weakly) What happened? Where are we?
Kate: At the hatch.
(Jack struggling to get up, grunts in pain and looks around the wreckage.)
Jack: They rebuild it?
Kate: Yeah, they did.
(Sawyer surprises Jack, by kicking him down the slope into the pit where jughead went off)
Kate: Sawyer! (As she climbs down to help Jack)
Sawyer: (To Jack) You were wrong! Go on James blow it up! Blow it up! Just like we left it. You said we’d restart everything we built. Like the plane never crashed here on this island.
Kate: Stop it! Stop it!
Sawyer: We’re right back to where we started. Said, Juliet’s dead. She’s dead, you son of a bitch, ‘cause you were wrong!
Jack: Sawyer, I’m sorry. I thought we were supposed…I thought it would work.
Sawyer: Well, she’s dead!
Act 3:
(We cut back to flight 815, with Jack walking up the isle to the bathroom at the front of the plane. The U.S. marshal that was with Kate is standing by the door.)
Jack: You in line?
US Marshal: No, I’m just waiting for my client…
(At this time Kate walks out the door, bumping into Jack.)
Kate: I’m sorry, I…
Jack: It’s okay.
Kate: My name’s Kate.
US Marshal: Let’s get back to our seat, sweetheart.
(Jack watches them walk down the isle, as the camera switches over to where the marshal and Kate just set down. The marshal has food ready for Kate to eat.)
US Marshal: Umm, lasagna. No, no knife and fork for you honey.
Kate: What do you thing am I going to do, stab you with a knife?
(Sawyer then accidentally bumps into the marshal)
US Marshal: Hey, watch where your going buddy.
(Sawyer looks down and pans over to Kate)
Sawyer: Sorry…my bad.
(The camera follows Sawyer as he goes back to his seat. On his way he passes Doctor Artz talking to Hurley.)
Artz: Come on, just one.
Hurley: I really don’t want to.
Artz: I love… Come on, just do the line from the ad and I’ll leave you alone.
Hurley: Okay, fine. (With an Australian accent) “Oy! Have a cluckity cluck-cluck day, mate.”
Artz: (Laughs hard, then speaking to Sawyer who is seated across the isle) Do you know who this is? This is the owner of Mr. Clucks chicken. (To Hurley) Hey thanks for ridding coach with the rest of us.
Hurley: Alright man.
Sawyer: (To Hurley) How ‘bout that?
Artz: Do you mind me asking? How does a guy from a mental institution end up running Mr. Clucks chicken?
Hurley: Well, I won the lottery and I like chicken.
Artz: Oh, good. Good for you. (Walks away looking annoyed.)
Sawyer: (To Hurley) You know you shouldn’t really tell people all about it.
Hurley: And, why?
Sawyer: Because they’ll take advantage of you that’s why.
Hurley: Well I’m sorry, dude, but it’s not going to happen.
Sawyer: Why not?
Hurley: Nope, nothing ever happens to me. I’m the luckiest guy alive.
Act 4:
(The fourth act opens on Hurley lying on the outside of the Dharma van, with a bleeding Sayid on his lap. Jin exits the van.)
Hurley: What just happened?!
Jin: What’s wrong with this flashlight. (As Jin reaches for his ears, as if they are hurting)
Hurley: Dude who cares, it went from like day to night!
Jin. Maybe we moved the island.
Hurley: How do you know that? (Looking a bit groggy.)
Jin: White flash, headache.
Hurley: What about Jack and everyone else? Are they going to be fine too?
Jin: I don’t know. They took the other Dharma van up the worksite. And then I heard gunfire…
Hurley: Shh! Hear that dude? (The two hear Sawyer yelling at Jack) It’s Sawyer!
Jin: Stay here with Sayid.
(The scene cuts back to the conversation between Jack and an angry Sawyer being held back by Kate)
Jack: The bomb must have gone off.
Sawyer: What do you mean the bomb went off? You’d think we’d be standing here?
Jack: I don’t know.
Sawyer: That’s right! You don’t! For once you don’t know!
Jin: (Who just arrived at the site of the wreckage) Jack! Sayid needs help!
Jack: Where’s Sayid?
Jin: With Hurley at the van. This way! He’s still bleeding; we don’t know what to do.
(Kate walks towards the epicenter of the rubble thinking she hears something below)
Sawyer: Say Doc, great idea to save Sayid. He…
Kate: Hey, shut up!
(Leaning in closer Kate hears Juliet yelling)
Juliet: (Faintly) Help me, please, help me!
(Hearing this Sawyer runs towards Juliet’s voice)
Sawyer: Juliet!
Kate: Oh my God.
Sawyer: Juliet!
(At this time, the camera goes back to where Hurley has stayed with Hurley. Not one to be strong around blood, Hurley, covers his nose as Sayid is coughing blood.)
Hurley: Oh, God. This is gross.
Sayid: (Grunts)
Hurley: Don’t worry, dude, everything’s going to be fine. (As he says this he exams the bloody bandages around Sayid’s wound.)
Sayid: Inaudible
Hurley: Huh?
Sayid: Inaudible
Hurley: Just try and not talk.
Sayid: I’ve tortured more people than I can remember. (I’m a) Bad man and I’m going to die.
Hurley: Sayid, come on!
Sayid: Inaudbile (Sayid appears to be near death.)
(Just then Hurley hears a rustling in the bushes nearby.)
Hurley: Hello?! Jin? (Hurley stands up after looking at Sayid, and gets the handgun out of the Dharma van.) Jin? I’ve got a gun! (Hurley says as he tries to figure out how to reload the gun.) And I now how to shoot it! (Hurley corners the front of the van, pointing the gun towards where he heard the noise.)
(Turning around slowly, Hurley, sees Jacob)
Jacob: Hello, Hugo. Remember me?
Act 5:
(The scene starts with Jin and Sun sitting together on flight 815. Sun sits admiring a conversation between Bernard and Rose.)
(In Korean)
Jin: Why are you staring at them?
Sun: I—they just seem so happy.
Jin: Button your sweater.
(As Sun buttons the top button of her sweater, the scene goes over to John Locke examining the flight safety pamphlet, as he sits in his passenger seat. The camera pans over to show Boone sitting on his row, with Frogert sitting between the two)
Boone: You’re wasting your time, man. The plane goes down here over the ocean we’re dead.
Locke: Actually, on a call sea, a good pilot, will get you down safely. And we have a few things to keep us afloat until they find us. (Boone looks at Locke and smiles)
Locke: What?
Boone: Good that you know that. What are you doing in Australia? Business or pleasure?
Locke: Pleasure. You?
Boone: I went down to get my sister out of a bad relationship. But, turns out she didn’t want to get out of it, so. Here I am.
Boone: So, what’d you stop on over for vacation?
Locke: Actually, I went on a walkabout.
Boone: Really? Like…like Crocodile Dundee?
Locke: (Laughs) Not exactly like that…but, but it was pretty interesting, we spent 10 days in the outback, nothing put our packs and our knives. Slept under the stars. Made our own fires, hunted our own food.
Boone: Wow! I wouldn’t make it two days without my cellphone.
(Locke laughs)
Boone: You’re not pulling my leg are you?
Locke: Why would I do that?
(Boone laughs and takes a drink)
Boone: This thing goes down, I’m sticking with you.
Act 6
(The scene starts with Flocke picking up the bloody knife that Ben just used to kill Jacob. He takes the knife over to a nearby rug and cuts a corner of it off, to clean the knife with. The camera pans over to the fire where we see a distraught Ben Linus standing limply.)
Flocke: (To Ben) You can stop starring at the fire. Jacob’s gone. He’s gone.
Ben: Why doesn’t he just come back? Why did he just let me kill him?
Flocke: Because he knew that he was beaten.
Flocke: Ben, I want you to go outside and tell Richard, that I need to talk with him.
Ben: Talk to him how? Why?
Flocke: Just go get me Richard.
(The scene goes outside of the statue, where Sun and Frank are overlooking what appears to be a fight between Bram and Richard. Illana is standing between Richard and Bram.)
Sun: Where are they?
Frank: Can’t understand what he says here. …that damn box. Guess they…
Frank: I’m not lying…still can’t understand Frank here.
(At this time Bram begins to walk forward as Richard stops him.)
Richard: Hey, hey! Listen to me! Listen carefully. No one goes in there unless Jacob invites him in.
Illana: Richard, that’s why we’re here, ‘cause Jacob invited us.
Richard: Asking who’s at the bottom of that damn statue, doesn’t mean you’re in charge.
Illana: Then who is?
(Ben approaches)
Ben: Richard.
Richard: Ben!
(Ben is clutching his arm as if he was hurt.)
Richard: What happened?
Ben: Everything’s fine. John wants to see you.
Illana: Is Jacob alright?
(Asked to Ben)
Ben: I’m sorry, who are you?
Richard: Answer the question.
Ben: Of course Jacob’s fine, they both together just inside. John wants… to talk to you.
Richard: John wants to talk to me?
(Richard grabs Ben by the arm taking him to John Locke’s body)
Ben: I don’t understand. Why are you doing this to me? Why can’t you just talk to John?
Richard: Of course I’ll talk to John. But before I do, there’s someone you should talk to first.
(Richard says this and throws Ben towards Locke’s body which is laying on the beach. Ben looks down realizing that the person he was speaking to was not John Locke)

IGN Article with Damon and Carlton - 30th Jan

Carlton Cuse,
Damon Lindelof,
Man in Black,
Richard Alpert
Thanks to The ODI for the heads up of this article from IGN. You can read the full article here.
Q: Regarding the footage that was leaked today, were you shocked it got out there, or was it that this was the right time for people to see those first few minutes?
Lindelof: [Chuckles] I mean, they were on a flash drive in a bottle that ABC sent out, so it's one thing to call it a leak and it's another thing to reach over and turn on the faucet. They've been great. When Carlton and I basically said, "We don't want any material from the final season to get out in advance of the premiere," they were enormously willing to play ball. But when we said we wanted to do sunset on the beach in Hawaii, and that we'd be showing the first hour of the show on Saturday, it didn't seem fair to the people who weren't actually going to be here to give them nothing. So this is the compromise we came up with.
Cuse: We didn't want, basically, stuff to become stale. So we felt like three or four days ahead of the premiere, for there to be some hint as to what's going to happen in Season 6 is exciting for the audience, as opposed to if they'd been pounded for four months with images of Season 6. It wouldn't be so fun.
Q: It seems that Faraday was right and everything seems to be back on track, as if 815 never crashed. But you couldn't help notice that Jack sensed something…
Cuse: Well you know, that's what's cool about it.
Lindelof: And Cindy [the flight attendant] only gave Jack one bottle this time around.
Cuse: So I think you have to figure that we're up to something more than a literal recreation of what happened in the pilot, and we are.
Lindelof: You'll know a lot more in 24 hours than you do now, that's for sure.
Q: Are we going to learn more about why Richard doesn't age soon?
Cuse: Yes you will. You will definitely learn more about Richard Alpert this season. Now, whether it's enough for you to be satisfied, that'll be up to you. But we're definitely going to explain more about him.
Lindelof: We've been coming up against what we call the chicken and the egg conundrum, which is every time we answer a question, there's two questions left in its wake. So we have to decide where we draw the line. So if the question is, "Are we going to learn more about Richard? Are we going to see his origin story?", the answer is, we would be remiss if we were not to present that. But if we were to say, "Are we going to definitively answer all these mysteries regarding Richard?", it's literally impossible to do.
Q: Are there teams supporting Jacob and the Man in Black? And what should we call that guy, by the way?
Cuse: The Man in Black.
Lindelof: Call him the Man in Black.
Q: Are there teams? Are there people that are going to take sides this season?
Cuse: People are going to take sides, but that doesn't mean they're not going to switch sides later on. It's a little bit like baseball pre-season. You're on a team, but there's a lot of trading going on.
Lindelof: I think one thing to keep in mind though is that just because one guy wears white and the other guy wears black, don't make immediate judgments over who's good and who's evil. Jacob has kind of put our guys through the wringer in a lot of ways, so it might be interesting to see what the Man in Black has to say for himself.

Thanks to DarkUFO reader John for the following report and photos.
Here on Oahu eagerly awaiting the premier event on Sat. The screen and stage area are currently being assembled.
Went strolling around the island to a few of the past filming locales and came across a set to be used for filming Friday. It's labeled as "Locke's Camp", part of episode 6-10, and is set in the banyon tree area near Turtle Bay on Oahu's north coast. Looks like a primitive campsite with many different shelter-structures and campfire areas. Attached are a few pics from the site.
In addition, went by the Lost studio and saw a scene being filmed directly on the parking lot featuring Sayid. he appeared to be on top of a deep shaft looking in and possibly chatting with someone(?). he was dressed in his typical island garb and we thought we may have seen a handgun in the scene. Through-in a picture of Dharma-ville just fo fun.
Will keep you posted-
