Here are 2 books that will be shown in Episode 4.04 - Egg Town.
More importantly—I know that was a really long-winded intro to my little secret—there are two fantastic books that are going to be in the fourth episode of the season (entitled “Eggtown” and airing February 21st): Philip K. Dick’s Valis and Adolfo Bioy Casares’s The Invention of Morel.
Valis Wiki Link
The main character in VALIS is Horselover Fat, an author surrogate. "Horselover" is English for the Greek word philippos (Φίλιππος), meaning "lover of horses" (from philo "brotherly or comradely love" and hippos "horse"); "Fat" is English for the German word "dick".
Even though the book is written in the first-person-autobiographical, for most of the book Dick treats himself and Fat as two separate characters; he describes conversations and arguments with Fat, and harshly if sympathetically criticizes his opinions and writings. The major subject of these dialogues is spirituality, as Dick/Fat is/are ostensibly obsessed with several religions and philosophies, including Christianity, Taoism, Gnosticism and even Jungian psychoanalysis, in the search for a cure for what he believes is simultaneously a personal and a cosmic wound. Near the end of the book the messianic figure, incarnated by the child Sophia (a name associated with Wisdom in many Gnostic texts), cures him (temporarily), and the narrator describes his surprise that Horselover Fat has suddenly disappeared from his side.

A fugitive hides on a deserted island somewhere in the South Pacific. Tourists arrive afterward, and his fear of being discovered becomes a mixed emotion when he falls in love with one of them. He wants to tell her his feelings, but an inexplicable phenomenon keeps them apart.

wow... the second book makes me think of the theory of Kate ending up with one of the freighter guys :O
Hmmmmmmm, interesting indeed!
Sophia is associated with knowledge because it is derived from the word philosophy - " A Greek word meaning Love of Knowledge. "
One strong attribute of the Greeks was that they were extremely well educated in philosophy. They were learners and put much effort into it.
So strange - why does it have me as Rhema sometimes and LionQueen other times?
I'd say the second one is more referring to Jack and Kate in the flash forwards. They like eachother, but something is keeping them apart.
I think the second sounds more like something that would be part of the history of the island. Maybe Ben really was born on the island like he claims and his mom had a thing with someone from the island.
Well the second one is refering for Jack and Kate or for Sawyer and Kate,or maybe for the both.Because we know Sawyer and Kate are separated, and He and Kate will have many unresolved issues maybe she will want to say her truth feelings for him but she can't because he is on the island. The same thing is for Jack\Kate maybe Kate wants to tell that she loves him but she can't because something is keeping them apart and she can't show her truth feelings for him.
SPOILERS FROM "THE INVENTION OF MOREL" ahead...
The main character hides on a deserted island. Afterwards tourists arrived and he falls in love with one of them, Faustine, but he never interacts with any of them them, he just watches because he's afraid to be discovered. Later on he finds out that these people are not real people, only images proyected by a machine, invented by Morel, who's also one of the tourists. All these people died a long time ago and their images are meant to be proyected on these island over and over again for all the eternity, doing the same exact things in some kind of parody of inmortality.

Wow, "La invencion de Morel", my favorite book!!!! Read it!!!!
I've long suspected the writings of Philip K. Dick, one of America's greatest writers period, would come up in LOST.
About time.
Sorry Lena, please don't mention any spoilers from the the big warning spoiler posts. Thanks :)
Vast Active Living Intelligence Sytem is what the acronym VALIS is for.
Here's a better link about the book than WikiPedia's.

i think ben and sawyer could read those books in this episode, they love reading ^^
'The Invention of Morel' is one of my favorite books... it's hard to discuss the possible meaning it has for Lost without giving away the book's big twist though! It's definitely been discussed before though. Given what we know about 'Eggtown', I can't wait to see how it figures in.
