Thanks to Jennifer for the heads up on this article over at Variety. The summary of which is.
* One of the DeGroots is alive
* Locke's Helen, Libby, and Emma & Zack have not been forgotten and will hopefully/probably be back
* Ben was lying about not knowing about Smokey
Some highlight's from this morning's Q&A at the National Assn. of Broadcasters confab with "Lost" stewards Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.
We will find out more back story as to why the late Libby was in the same mental hospital with Hurley, prior to the plane crash, and presumably after she gave her boat to Desmond for the race.
Will we at some point catch up with Emma and Zack, the two kids from the tail section group of survivors who were kidnapped by the Others in season 2's "The Other 48 Days."
To the question of whether we'll ever see Katey Sagal's Helen character (Locke's former flame) again, Darlton indicated that they hoped so.
To the question of whether the DeGroots, the hirsute couple who founded the Dharma Initiative, are still alive, Cuse and Lindelof paused a bit and then pressed for more specificity on the time frame of the question. As of where the time line of "Lost" will be when the series returns on April 24, Darlton would only say: "One of them is."
Lindelof let it be known that in a recent episode when one of the castaways (Locke? Hurley? Sawyer? I can't remember offhand) asked Ben if he knew what the island's smoke monster really was and Ben responded that he didn't know -- big lie. "Ben was lying about the smoke monster," Lindelof said.
And once again, Darlton made it clear that they do in fact have a blueprint for the series, stem to stern, and that "the last scene has been in our heads for a long period of time."
More to come from the sesh, which mostly focused on big-picture business issues and production processes, once I transcribe the tape.
In the meantime, above and below are some pics from the upcoming April 24 seg "The Shape of Things to Come."

I'm glad to hear that Ben knows about the Smoke Monster. This is HIS Island (to me), I would hate if he didn't know what it was.
Interesting that ONE of the Degroots is alive... how would that come into play?
And VERY reassuring to hear that they have "the final scene in their heads". I love it! :)
Depends on what time frame we are talking about? Next episode?
If next episode is a Ben FF, then does that mean that one of the Degroots are alive in the future? Does that mean both are alive now in the present?
Great, I've always wondered what happened to the Degroots:)
I wonder they will do with Helen? Good to hear the conformation that we will definatley find out Libby's backstory, but is that a season 5 story? So we will have to wait longer for answers:(
I hope we will get some answers from Ben about smokey in a hold him up against the wall, gun to his head kinda fashion:)
The way Darlton worded his answer concerning the "DeGroots", it sounds like one of them is still living in the present time, which would be close to New Year's Eve of '04.
It's good to hear Helen will be back, as she will probably come to play in the future, as opposed to Locke's past. Libby will likely have her story fully revealed through Hurley's "docking accident" story in a later season, and Emma & Zack are likely hangin' out in the temple.
As far as Ben lying about Smokey... well, duh. Ben knows *everything* people! Haven't you realized this yet, lol.
2 things:
1) DeGroots! :O
2) With a gun pointed to his head, why would Ben lie about the Smoke Monster? Is that secret so important he'd rather be shot than give it away?
Maybe Darlton is masking how much they're liars and put it into Ben's character.
"the last scene has been in our heads for a long period of time."
Bastards! Give it up already!
"And once again, Darlton made it clear that they do in fact have a blueprint for the series, stem to stern, and that "the last scene has been in our heads for a long period of time."
OMG this is so utterly not true! J.J. Abrahms ever said so. He said he only had the basic story idea; he didn't even know what was in the hatch saying 'we'll figure that out later'
Tom
well tom, "a long period of time" is not the same as "from the beginning of the show."
to them, a long period of time could be 6 months...
True,
or they could still be working on it at this very moment.
tom
I find it mind-blowing that they know what the last scene is going to be. Wow.
And Ben would rather give up the fact he had a spy on his enemy's freighter (within earshot of said enemy's henchmen) than reveal anything of what he knows about the smoke monster? Wow.
1) The one DeGroot who is still alive is not necessarily Gerald or Karen DeGroot. If they had a child, then he or she could be the "one of them" who is still alive.
2) What's with this assumption that we need a flashback of the deck collapse? We already know what happened--the deck had too many people on it, and it broke. Some people died, and Hurley blamed himself because he was the last person to step out onto it. I don't see anything about that that needs further exploration or clarification. I know there's this theory that Libby's husband was one of the people who died, but I don't see why some filthy-rich yachting enthusiast from Newport Beach would be at a house party in Hurley's neighborhood.
3) Ben was willing to lie about the monster when he had a gun to his head because he believes that the island won't let him die. Ben has never seemed all that frightened of death--except when he got cancer, which clearly worried him a lot, because he thought it was the island's way of telling him he was no longer needed. But then a spinal surgeon 'fell from the sky,' renewing his faith that the island will keep him alive no matter what.
Most interesting is the news of the Degroots. I've always wondered about them and it seems like most people have forgot. So where could these DHARMA survivors be? In hiding, like Hanso and Valenzetti?
