I hope its Ben in the coffin. Can't wait for the finale.
I hope the reveal of who's in the coffin isn't the last scene and 'game changing moment'.
What a terrible synopsis... only four people profiled, and Claire is family (under Locke, the authors note that Jack isn't related to the deceased). Lame research.
The "Frozen Donkey Wheel" is the second-to-last scene, so I wouldn't be surprised if they blow the hell out of us then, and in the last scene show us who's in the coffin. But by that point we'll all just be speechless anyway.
Pretty much how I felt. Except I never really considered Claire. I hope it's Ben. And if it's Locke I'll be sick.
Sometimes I think that coffin is empty and it's all a trap... if Ben or Locke are inside, I keep thinking it's all a trap too. Maybe something planned by either Ben, Widmore or even Abaddon. I have no idea why, though.
Maybe "Desmond" is on the coffin as a trap made by Ben to arouse Pen's interest so he can kill her there, it's unlikely but could be.
The thing is I don't get Jack's reaction or the fact he said he's neither family nor a friend. I can't understand either why Kate was almost offended by Jack's question about going to the funeral.
Weird... weird... very fishy. Whatever happens, I don't think it will be final.
gaz, I'm with you. It should be the island, as the island hasn't gotten ignored for the overexposure of the Crapeanic Six.
I'm sorry, the real story for season 5 is the people on the island.
Ben NOOOO! I hope it's Michael. Or empty coffin.
Well, they got a definite point with Michael and his family. Never even considered his family.
However, he was a bit alienated from his mother and disappearing again for, what, close to 3 years (the funeral scene is in 2008) who knows if they knew he'd ever have died. Especially if they forced him to use 'Kevin Johnson' alias.
I'm still leaning towards him,though.
Locke is staying on the island unless he dies from a time travelling nosebleed and happens to warp to the future. But I find that scenario unlikely.
Ben is now seeming like it's the most probable and considering he has no family...

I would like it.
I thought about it several times, but now, I think that's not going to happen.
And now, my same question again: Where are the sneak peeks for the finale ???
Anybody else feel like Season 5 won't even take place on the island at all?
How does Jack know about the true identity of Jonathan Lantham, the guy in the article he was reading on the plane?
Thanks Sarah & Dark for the scans.
a part of me thinks it would be a character that no one has really thought of, like Richard Alpert perhaps? Or maybe one of the freighter crew. I guess i just dont see it as being Ben because i honestly think that could kill the show. Yeah i don't think it is Ben (and i have a perfectly good reason too (see latest podcast)).
Hmm.
I honestly hope it isnt Michael, that would be a let down in my mind.
Maybe it will be Sawyer and thats when everyone goes "WHAAAAAAAAAAAA?!" lol. I mean, it makes sense for no family to come and see him, he's said many times that he has nothing to go back to. But i guess that doesnt explain why Kate wouldn't go.... hmmmm/
Whoever is in the coffin, that character should not only be a WTF guy in the coffin, but also should be connected to the present island events and to the flashforward events. I mean, seeing Ben in the coffin is all right, but "why?" - that's the main question. If Darlton serve us Locke in the coffin, they need to make a great connection and make us wonder not only "how?", but also "why?".
If it's Locke I will die

The publish date of the article was actually 2007, April 5th, according to lostpedia. although, this may even be changed by the writers according to the article.

IF it is Locke in the coffin:
In order to have a Desmond-style flash-experience to the future, where is body is off-island...Locke would still have to leave the island at some point between the present and that flash.
Therefore, however you look at it, whether it's his body time-travelling or simply his consciousness... Locke got off the island at some point and could not get back.
Whether that was willingly, thinking he could get back, or forced off by Widmore/Jacob/Richard/whoever, Locke left the island and had trouble getting back, looking at the coffin.
So there isn't a huge mystery. It's like his legs: we'd have already thought a better answer up in our heads - if we wanted him to leave forceably, it'll be a bad shock when we see him leave by choice, or vice versa.
What if a very old Jack from the future is in the coffin and Jack freaks out and tries to kill himself then to prove destiny wrong or something.
If Locke is in the coffin, I think he got booted off the island, and he was trying to enlist the 06 to return so he could get back to the island.
I don't think the Others would put up with half the crap the 825ers have endured. They'd just put him in the time portal machine [if there is one] and ship his crazy butt off the island.
I think it must be Claire. When we saw Jack say that the person was neither friend nor family, that was before we knew that Claire was Jack's half sister. Also, Jack wasn't about to share this new-found info with anybody, especially (well, maybe) Kate who has only Aaron now in her life, and would have to give up that baby to the rightful person (the grandmother). The lies and truth would make anybody crazy. Plus, after watching the last episode, and seeing Claire in Jacob's cabin with her father's ghost, I was positive she was dead. Remember how she wasn't quite right after the explosion at the camp, and felt a bit woozy? And then she was with the guy who could talk to ghosts and Sawyer when she disappeared, and that guy said that she left with her dad... hmmm... she seems dead to me. Maybe Jack found the island and brought her back when he was doing all of his "flying around".... And of course nobody would know to go to the funeral if that was the case, (ie. her mom), because it is one big secret, and she was supposed to have died in the plane crash and under water like they'd so lied, not on the island and in tact.
Good Lord, will people please stop talking about this "John Lantham" crap? Even in the show, it could be a fabricated article. My money is on the fact that it wasn't even meant to be seen at all. I paused it and framed by framed the sucker on my HD TV every time it came up, still couldn't make out anywhere near the detail from that screenshot. It simply wasn't mean to be seen, get over it folks.
@ four_toed_armenian: TPTB have indicated that season 5 would focus on the island, and specifically address the DI.
My guess would be next season will change the flashback/flashforward formula, instead switching between off-island O6 and the on-island survivors/others.
If it is Locke or Ben it will be a sad sad day for me.
My two favorite characters.
People are taking all this at too much face value. I am finding that fans of LOST go nuts over things like this. Just take all the information you have gathered from all the episodes and the DarkUFO site and you can easily narrow it down to a select few characters.
Here is some things we've learned. DarkUFO has a poll somewhere here that has a list of character names. One of the characters he said will be in the coffin. They are: Ben, Sayid, Desmond, Jacob, Sawyer, Locke, Alpert. And we know Jack is neither family nor friend to the coffin guy, and Kate obviously doesn't care about the deceased. That alone rules out Sawyer and Desmond, and Sayid as well. Desmond is am sure would be buried in his native Scotland, as would Sayid in Iraq, not L.A. I really can't see the producers shocking us with having Alpert in the coffin. This coffin ordeal is being made a BIG deal, so the person will be a MAJOR character on the show. Why would it be Jacob? That just wouldn't make sense to reveal him this way. We pretty much know nothing about him.
This leaves us with Locke or Ben. I can guarantee everyone it will be one of them. And to me, this season was all about Ben. He's the character who stood out the most, so it would be an amazing twist to see him in the coffin. But an even crazier twist, and a type of twist the LOST producers love doing, it will probably be Locke. Mainly because it raises so many God-damned more questions. They could go the obvious Benjamin Linus route, or the crazier twist of it being Locke. Hmmm, what would the producers of LOST do... I wonder.
I Hope Its Not Michael
Does EW know something we don't? Is the coffin occupant one of these four characters? Lord I hope not. I had convinced myself it had to be Juliet. Of this group Claire makes the most sense-sort of. Two-Ben and Locke- have unfinished business as far as the island is concerned. The island might not be done with Michael either. Plus Harold has only been in half a season-too soon to be killed off after all the publicity announcing his return. I really think it's not him because he is so obvious a choice for many reasons including that newspaper article. Was that newspaper business a foiler? Claire is still on the island with her body being held by Christian in Jacob's cabin. Plus Kate would not make that comment about Claire; she would about Juliet. So I've answered my own question-it can't be one of these characters. It's Juliet IMHO. Bonding via handcuffs is something only Ben could pull off so Kate is probably still upset with Juliet and all the Others.
