Thanks to William for the heads up.
Viewers of the fifth series of Lost will not know where or when the action is set, the show's producers have said.
Talking at arts and comic book convention Comic-Con, they revealed they would play around with the show's flash-back and flash-forward formula. Executive producer Carlton Cuse said: "We have something new this year. We're going to mix it up."
Lost, which centres on a group of plane crash survivors, won a Golden Globe for best drama series in 2006.
Executive producer Damon Lindelof said "the flash-forwards were a bit limiting" during the last series of the programme, as they could only show a group of six survivors who the audience already knew had escaped the crash site.
"We could only focus on the Oceanic Six because we didn't want to reveal certain things - like Desmond getting off the island," he said.
"When season five starts, you won't know when or where you are. And the way we tell stories will be different too."
"Also we have the guy who makes the whooshing sound for us and we would not want to put him out of work."
US network ABC has allowed the producers to set an expiration date for the show, which will draw to a close after the sixth series. Cuse said: "For us it was a huge advantage to get an end date to the show and that really allowed us to turn a corner.
"We knew exactly how much story we had left. It really invigorated series four and it's been very exciting as we plan series five now."
Lindelof told the 6,500 assembled fans: "You will be rewarded for hanging on all the way to end of series six. We think that we have a lot of cool stuff from here on out."
Lost has just been nominated for an Emmy for outstanding drama series, ahead of the award show in 21 September. It is broadcast by Sky One in the UK.

This, combined with the reveal that Daniel Faraday travels back in time 30 days to record that video with Marvin Candle... explains why they had to wait until the 5th season to address a lot of those old mysteries like Danielle's backstory. If we're going to have him, and possibly other characters (like maybe Jin ?), arriving at strange times in the timeline now, that opens the can of monkeys for all sorts of interesting storytelling.
So... I don't think they can dodge the questions about time travelling though now, right ? If Daniel Faraday sounds like an adult 30 years in the past, there's no way that's just the Desmond-style "flash" thing... he would've been a child 30 years ago. That's got to be genuine time travel, yes ?
I wonder if this will make the fantasy league difficult (the categories dealing with specific character FB/FF)
Good point UFO.. I feel sorry for G-Man who will have to score the episodes lol
I can't wait to not know 'when or where I am'. Having a hard time buying the notion that the island has reverted to Dharma's heyday and jumpsuit-clad workers are going to pop out of nowhere but we'll see.
And yeah, good luck with that G-Man :/

hehehehehe.
TLA - "I can't wait to not know 'when or where I am'."
yeah me too. but next season, we'll be desperate to know when and where we are! ;)
Oh, oops, I just re-read my comment above... I meant 30 *years*, not 30 days. Duh.
GregDean:
They already have shown us that it's possible for them to travel through time with their bodys (and not just their concience).. Remember when Ben turned the donkey wheel and then turned in tunesia in 2005..
At this rate we won't know what is going on until the cast reunion, 10 years from now.

Damn, this is what happens when I don't have the internet for two months. What's that all about?
The Marvin Candle transmission from 30 years ago was this year's big Comic Con video (like the Orchid Video last year)... it was the spoiler story directly before this one:

Your boy Daniel has been busy ;)
Basically, a video was shown at Comic Con that featured Dr. Marvin Candle (who revealed his real name to be Pierre Cheng) speaking in the 70's and fully aware of the purge and various other facts about the future. The man operating the camera sounds very much like Daniel Faraday, prompting speculation that he has somehow ended up in that time. It hasn't yet been confirmed but Francois Chau, the actor who plays Marvin Candle, has said that the person behind the camera is someone we have seen before.
Basically, confirmation that Desmond is still an integral part of this show. Awesome!

Son of a &$*@#!!! And I thought it was bad enough that we all but doubled the number of characters involved with the LFL. Now I've got this to contend with?
This will either make my job insnely difficult or much easier. Who knows, maybe I won't need to bother with FB or centricity points at all! That'll really make the competition tight though.
And yes, I do read spoilers over the summer. :-P
"And yes, I do read spoilers over the summer. :-P" -haha
I believe in G-Man
Just one word: E X C I T I N G
i have this overwhelming feeling that the island moved back into the 70's when dharma was on the island.. so it will pick up with the current losties on the island suddenly intertwined in this story of past island. . . a young widmore perhaps being present :D
I was thinking recently about the casual Lost viewer, those who don't hover over message boards and Lost internet sites yearning for more more more. Yes, there are many "casual" Lost viewers. What was it, 12 million people watched the season finale...there aren't 12 million people hanging on message boards during hiatus from Lost.
I've talked to people who gave up on Lost, those who don't venture onto the internet to keep up on the show, because it's simply not understandable to them any longer, this goes back as far as season 3. It appears that with an end date in site of 2010, Darlton isn't at all concerned about the casual Lost viewer. This type of format they speak of will most certainly loose more viewers out of confusion, those who weren't "Lost" will definitely be so now.
It's highly unusual to write a tv show to a demographic of internet obsessed fans. I say this with the utmost respect, as I am one of those fans, so please don't misunderstand. I'm reminded of how many people i've found myself explaining the show to. This new way of telling the story will be lovely to us, but I fear will be a ratings disaster to the casual viewer.
