My source has just told me that one of these 8 will die in the first 5 Episodes of Season 5. I've not been told myself who it is so no point asking me but this source is 100% reliable as he has been for the last 2 seasons.
Any thoughts as to who it may be?

Hmm...gotta be Juliet or Charlotte, and maybe Miles or. Dont see how they should kill of Rose, Sawyer and Alpert.
My money is on Miles. I don't think his character was super-well received last year by the audience.
I was wondering why they didn't sign Nestor Carbonell up as a series regular for Season 5, and now I think I see why. If he doesn't die, there's no reason why he'd still just be a re-occuring guest star since he's hanging out w/ and guiding one of the major main characters on the show. I'm thinking that Alpert's death (which leaves Locke without a reliable resource of knowledge about the island, which means he doesn't know what to do and screws the pooch badly over a conflict) is one of the "very bad things" that happened because of the Oceanic Six's departure.
They wouldn't kill Miles off this quickly. His character was actually received quite well, and even praised by critics. Not to mention, TPTB have a mancrush on Ken Leung.
I don't want any of these guys to die :(

Wow, this is actually one where I would mind everyone dying one way or the other.
Richard would surprise me - I think he will die eventually, if only because we've come to see him as immortal, but not now. We don't have another established Other, so he has to stay for a while.
If they kill Juliet, I'm going to dropkick Darlton. And not being on their continent won't keep me from it.
Agree that TPTB have a wild crush on Miles, so he would really astonish me.
Charlotte is a possibility, given that she's both not well-developed and a regular, so it's a semi-costly death. Seems a bit of a waste though.
Rose would be possible to show that things are "really bad," but, eh. She's more of a background player nowadays, I don't know if it would have much impact (which is quite a shame, really.)
Sawyer isn't gonna die before the end of the series. And even if we didn't all know that, Darlton said he and Kate would meet again, so I'm pretty sure it's not him.
Frank would be totally out of left field, so he'd be my dark horse bet, but...

It has to be Frank, caught up in the Widmore/Linus war. He is a keeper of the secret, so I see Widmore guys killing him off. What other purpose can he have by now, if not to illustrate the danger the O6 are in?
They won't kill a pregnant Penny. And there is already very few people on the island. The stories of Charlotte and Miles are yet untold, as well as Richard's and killing Rose would mean a severe mistake in continuity, because the island wouldn't kill someone who is obviously special. No way Sawyer or Juliet are going before reunion time.

I agree, and given that they were casting for a baby, she'll definitely have it. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee they won't kill her afterwards, or in childbirth.

No Sawyer for sure, and no Juliet for sure, right now they are the strongest characters on the island, a sort of leaders.

Isn't time round the bend this series? Surely we could see any of these people die and still have them around for the rest of the season, if not the show.
Remember, we've seen Locke dead, we've seen Rouseau die, and we've seen Marvin Candle/Pierre Chang tell us that he knows he is dead in our time... and we're going to see more of each of these.
To take advice from Q, we've got to stop thinking in such 3-dimensional terms.
I don't want any of them to die. Not even Charlotte although I can't stand her but I would rather have a female character on the show that I dislike than next to none. And if either Juliet or Charlotte bite it the island story is nearly womenless because Rose only shows up once in a blue moon anyway.
It will probably be Penny :( They need a reason for Desmond to return to the island. Anytime a character finds happiness in this series it is usually followed by tragedy. I really wanted Desmond and Penny to live happily ever after but I knew it was wishful thinking with Ben after them. If Penny is pregnant maybe Ben will have a change of heart, but it still is likely Penny won't make it through the series. If Penny dies surely Desmond won't last till the end of the series either. Even in an interview earlier this year he believed he would die before the series concluded.
I think it's Frank. Some very bad people might've gotten wind of Frank's role in helping the O6, or they think he has information about the island's location, so they whack him.

Actually, they all seem to say that all the time. I read in interviews with both Elizabeth Mitchell and Michael Emerson that they think they'll die before the end, and I remember Rebecca Mader saying in an interview that everyone in the cast always talks like that.
I mean, not sure if that is consoling in any way, since they are probably morbid within reason.
I hope it's not Juliet, Miles, Charlotte, Frank, or Richard. I know it isn't going to be Sawyer. So that leaves me with Rose and Penny, honestly Rose hasn't been that useful in the past couple of seasons, other then delivering snappy lines, I was hoping they would go into more detail about her cancer, but the way the filming snippets have been pouring out lately, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be Penny.
I think Ben could be another shocking death in the season finale.

It's also a direct parallel to what happened to Ben. Not that I think Des would turn into a second Roger Linus, but it's hardly like the show is above excessive melodrama.

I too see Frank as being a unwanted casualty in Ben's quest to kill Penny. Since Ben made that dramatic ultimatum late last season, I doubt he'll successfully kill off Penny THAT fast.
That, or Penny dies in childbirth and it'll make Ben look very lame.

I think that Desmond is included in Ben's "ALL OF YOU" have to go back statement. After all, I don't think the island really cares about the term "Oceanic Six" since it has already included John Locke in its demand. If Penny dies, it not only frees Desmond to return, but may in fact give him a reason to come back. The Island's healing power extend, it seems, even beyond "death."

After all Desmond's been through, isolated in a bunker on an island no one can find, with OCD of epic proportions, desperately hoping for something to happen that could never happen, getting a life again.
If Penny dies, Desmond will be spending the rest of his short life in a mental institution.
Not to mention Des and Penny are the only well written and credible couple on the show.

Well Richard has been signed to a long term contract, so i'm ruling out the never aging (never dieing) Richard.
Miles was in fact received quite well by the audience last year; he's on the island for a reason and he's chosen to stay there for a reason; i'm ruling out Miles.
Come on, we all know it's Penny...put these pieces of the puzzle all together and in usual LOST form, Desmond will be left to raise their child alone. Perhaps this force a FB into Desmonds life showing us why he had to raise his 3 brothers as well. And BTW, yes in interviews they all think they'll be the one to die...and HIC has said the same thing in the past.

This is so way after the fact, I doubt anyone is still reading these comments, but be that as it may: if you look at what appears to be the official cast list for this season there is a pretty good hint who will be this particular death. Especially if you take into account who isn't on it.
It has to be Charlotte. Episode 5 is called "This Place Is Death," and a main character died around episode 5 in seasons 2 and 3. ABC is omitting her from the main cast list and listing her as a guest star, and to them, she never was a main character since she wasn't listed by them last year. Her promo pictures indicate otherwise, but either way, it's because she didn't get any last year that she should've, since the credits listed her as a main character, or they can't give her death away. Also, we get a new cast photo around episode five usually, and the current one has her but not Jin. So removing her and adding in Jin makes perfect sense for the second one. And there's the fact that a casting call is someone located in Tunisia, where she was in her flashback last year. Usually main characters die in their flashback episodes. We've also seen her having a nosebleed in the promo, like Desmond did until he found Penny as his constant. And there was just one on tonight that showed Faraday over her body on the ground.
