Michael Emerson Talks About Season 6
Anyways do you have any more Lost scoop? --Erick
Ausiello: May's series finale is going to be a real downer, predicts Michael Emerson. "I don't think Lost will have a happy ending," he confessed to us at the Saturn Awards. "It's the end and I think we are going to start seeing more casualties. I would put money on major characters being killed. I believe it will be a sad ending to the show -- or at least bittersweet. I think it will definitely be a series finale for grownups." Emerson, meanwhile, is still trying to make sense of the season 5 finale. (Join the club!) "I killed Jacob... maybe... probably," he hedged. "It isn't like we haven't seen plenty of other people be killed and somehow come back. And what does it mean if I did kill him? I Who the hell was he anyway? Obviously, Ben wanted a father. So much of our show is about bad fathers. It is one of our biggest themes. And Jacob disappointed in those final moments. And maybe Jacob made it easy for him. Maybe that was all meant to happen. Is it all ordained? Maybe. And for that matter, can Jacob even be killed? Stay tuned is my response."

Confused as we are it seems!
I hated the finale of s5 i must say. To be honest when i first saw Jacob i said i'm not sure if i like that one. And now that we've seen jacob and his "pal" i must say i hate the direction the series is going to in s6. Hope I'm wrong but this sucked! That for sure isn't the show i liked for 3-4 very good seasons!
:(
CroatianMUSEfan,
I look at season 5 as the "filler" season. It sure seems that way to me. I definitely believe season 6 will bring back the greatness. And how can you hate the direction the series is going in when we don't have a clue of what's in store for the final season? We don't know what the bomb did. I doubt their will be a reset. That would just undo the last 5 years and I doubt they would do that.
Sounds like certain "bad fathers" will have some redemptive yet tragic stories to play out. I also think the event of Ben killing Jacob will cease to exist in season 6.
The time travel and bomb didn't bother me that much!
What i found completely out of LOST as we know it were the 2 "new" characters we got to know....
I dunno. There were always some fantasy elements there but this doesn't fit in 4 me!
Don't like it! Hope they'll make it look better in s6, although i can't say i'm too optimistic anymore....
Unfortunetly, Pellegrino just joigned Sypernatural and will be a recurring character next season... so maybe we won't see him that much on Lost for Season 6, meaning that he's really dead.
Unfortunately, Pellegrino just joined Supernatural and will be a recurring character next season... so maybe we won't see him that much on Lost for Season 6, meaning that he's really dead.
I don't really see that this is a spoiler... it's just Emerson's own theories... until he starts to get the scripts for the next season I don't see that he'll know any more than any of us do...
I agree with The Scribe...
"it isn't like we haven't seen plenty of other people be killed and somehow come back"
Ahh, remember the sweet old days when everyone used to say in interviews "with this show, when you're dead, that's it"?
Oh, and when D&C used to say "there's definitely no time travel"?
Also there was the brief period in S3 when various members of the cast and crew stated something along the lines of "the great thing about Ben is, he never really lies...just manipulates the truth". Yeah right!
I don't like to use the phrase 'jump the shark' (it's not like you can pinpoint it) but Lost is currently aboard a chartered flight several miles above the shark and ascending.
I still love it though.
I'm with The Scribe too. Besides, Jack Bender at this year Banff TV Festival stated that the show will actually have a satisfying ending.
Craig, 'satisfying' does not mean 'happy'. So both Bender and Emerson could both be right.
PLENTY of films and television shows have satisfying yet sad endings: American History X, Chasing Amy, Life on Mars (UK version - bittersweet when you realise what's really happened), The Office (UK version before the specials, as it was meant to be, IMO, not that the specials weren't good in their own way), Armageddon (mentioned because I can see Sawyer having a similar end to Stamper in an attempt to save the rest), etc.
I can see Lost having a satisfying ending but still, as Emerson theorised, not a happy one.
I read the article that Craig mentionned. It was in the NY Post. I also took it like it's not going to be as dark as ME's theory.
i think jacobs friend was right all along it always ends the same i dont think the losties were ever meant to succed i think they were meant to fail all along jacob just try to change it i know the heat has went to my head its fuckin roasting down here in britain.
Well, it will either end with oceanic landing safely at LAX after saving the world, probably with a scene of Juliet at the airport ambivalently smiling as she spots Sawyer disembark...and possibly with the notable 'disappearance' of Jack and Kate from the passengers on the plane.
OR, it will end with them all CLEARLY dead in the Trench plane, but at the same time undead on the Island...with the fate of the world still at play as Jacob brings another bunch of experimental humans in for a landing.
(Oh, and Jacob is not human...he is a fire entity...so he can't be killed. Jacob and anti-Jacob just 'wear' the humans, brains included, as temporary garb...which is why they looked and sounded so 'modern' way back at the time of the Black Rock...Jacob being kicked into the fire MIGHT have rid us of Pellegrino, but it was simply an acknowledgement by anti-Jacob that he'd been folied yet again, and kicking Jacob into the fire just hurried things along by returning fire to fire. Jacob will now show up in some other dead-human brain-body garb.)
Wow, there was so much season 5 praise and suddenly everyone is crapping on it. I loved Season , in fact it may be my favorite season yet. No clue where it's heading and that's what I love.
I saw a 2 hour q and A with Michael Emerson Tuesday night in LA, he said the same thing, a "finale for grownups". He said he doesn't expect a "neat and tidy" ending at all, and still hopes that Ben ends up the hero, despite some truly "despicable" actions. It was a great Q and A, Emerson really is an intelligent and down to earth actor.
@McMurphy
the fiery-jacob theory?...serious, of course; thought it was obvious!
Well at least Emerson isn't creating false hope, hehe.
And fiery-jacob and all, that might be true; but Why does the ending have to be either landing safely or dead in the trench w/ghost Losties on the Island?
Am I alone in thinking that both of those would be one of the most shit endings ever?
Well, this really isn't a spoiler. It's Michael Emerson's opinion on what he thinks will happen. But it's some interesting insight.
Well I know it isn't a spoiler, but it could be considered every so slightly spoilery since the theorizing comes from a major, major character of the show. If he turns out to be right, some viewers might be upset that he "spoiled" it for them; if only he was guessing.
I seriously doubt that TPTB would divulge major spoilers to the actors, regardless of how significant that actor's role is. I don't believe Matthew Fox when he says he knows the end game. I'm also surprised to see all the season 5 bashing going on here. I thought it was one of the better seasons myself.
why the season 5 bashing? whats happening? i don't get it? season 5 ruled. there is no current direction, and I am CERTAIN the best and craziest WTF moments are yet to come. of course there will not be a happy ending. how can there be? i'm ok with that. its not like i won't be crying come may 2010 anyway...
We know that Roger is Ben's father, and that he's dead; but what this interview made me to believe that Roger somehow was inside of Jacob and Ben killed his own father again by stabbing onto Jacob's heart - he talks so much about Jacob and fatherhood that if I never were to see or know that Roger was his father, I would probably say "Hell no, Jacob is Ben's father!" after reading this article. :D
maybe they weren't lying about the 60 foot tall, flaming jacob... after all he did get pushed into a fire :)
hellonwheels826 i disagree with the fact Jack doesn't know unless they have mislead him about the ending but I think he does and it has to do with his reason for the awful fake beard. That same awful beard is on Mr. DeGroot and I think Jack found out the end game when that scene was shot. But then again, I'm wrong an awful lot. hehe
So losties were meant to fail and die? What a waste of entertainment!!! There has to be some serendipity. Or was all that talk of hope and faith just to keep us watching?
Come on lost writters! A story like lost should be about overcoming failure, not sucomming to it.
