Ohhhh AWESOME. I totally thought they were being evil but it seems they aren't. Although you never know again. But if they weren't up to no good why were they so worried with Kate finding out.
Also why does juliet want to stop them? Is she bad or just being guilted into doing so by Harper? or being manipulated by Ben?

My thoughts: Daniel and Charlotte are good - but they're being lied to by the others on the freighter. The real reason they've been tasked with shutting down this station? So that it's safe for the rest of the freighter crew to come to the island for their "real" objective.
Ben AND the freighter crew are bad for the Losties...

I think that this is exactly what happened in the purge. TPTB on Season 3 DVD said that Ben pulling out that gas canister on his dad was for a thematic purpose. Ben is protecting the island. I think that Smokey is acting as the Other Woman, and Smokey wants to protect the island first. This is unfortunate for the Losties, but they are not as important as the island!

They are good as the guy above said but being lied to. Ben is the real good guy, but good comes in different shades and he will be a very murky, ambiguous good.

@josh - if they were big I'm sure Dark would put them behind spoiler tags. Besides, he's really only done that for full episode synopses and deathwatch posts. :)
Juliet is trying to stop them because she's being manipulated by the "other woman". Perhaps the others have threatened to kill her sister and niece if she doesn't? And remember in the trailer Juliet doesn't seem to know what Dan and Char are up to, so she could have been told it was something evil.
I'm glad Dan and Charlotte are good. I like Charlotte (mainly because of the actress) even if no one else does. She's been kept amibguous so far. I think we'll see more of her background and motivations after this episode.
I agree that it's possible that Dan and Char are being manipulated by the other freighter people too. Keamy and Omar didn't exactly seem like nice guys.
As for why they knock out Kate...maybe they just find Kate annoying? ;)
Just because you're wearing a bullet proof vest on the battlefield does not make you a good guy. While I'm all for Daniel being naturally good and ignorant to the freighter guys real intentions (And I do believe Miles is in it for the money and knows less than we think), the lines are blurred for me when it comes to Charlotte.
If an evil group of freighter people are going to send 4 people to the island, some of whom are ignorant as to their boss's true intentions, I think it's likely one of them will know more to keep the others in check. Then again, that person could have been Naomi. Whatever the case, I think we're left with 3/4 good people ignorantly doing what they're told for an evil cause.

Google reader used to post everything you posted in white text on a white background. I don't know how it looked to other people... but I used to have to highlight spoilers to see them. I think that's what the guy above was talking about.

Ah I see, that makes sense. Yes, we fixed the problem with the RSS Reader with the text being hard to view without running the mouse over the text. It should be Black text on white background by default now for all the major RSS Readers.
Oh! That certainly fills in some blanks for "The Man Behind the Curtain". The Others didn't just conduct a purge -- they conducted a Purge using the Dharma Initiative's own equipment. That explains why the Purge took place when it did. Actually, makes me wonder if the Dharma Initiative was planning to Purge the Others or if the ability for the Tempest to do that was intended for a more beneign purpose. I had also wonder what role Ben played while posing a Dharma Initiative Work Man, and this seems like it might have been part of it.
My guess as to good guys and bad guys: Everyone's a good guy in their own mind, but both Ben and the freighter people (maybe not with Charlotte & Daniel's knowledge) would be willing to conduct another Purge. I don't think Ben's a friend to the Beach Campers unless it suits him, but in "The Economist" we see that Sayid trusts him in the future, so something must have happened there.
I think Juliet is being manipulated by being told Dan and Charlotte are going to gas the island, when they are just trying to do the opposite.
It also explains why they were so interested to find out that Juliet was not on flight 815.
And I agree with the poster above, the 4 freighter folk seem to be just being used by the big cheeses.

good point. we are assuming that the temple is an actual temple. it could be an undiscoverd station named the temple , who knows. i also think that harper is smokie ,and as far as the others goes, ben said he was trying to keep everybody from being killed. hmmmm? makes you wonder what miles's purpose was for the mission. we know he is in it for the money, but what did his boss send him to do?

You are joking, right? You are in the spoiler section. Episode synopsis and death spoilers are behind "are you sure" buttons. If what you want is a press release, I believe you can find those @ abc.com. Ausiello can be found @ tvguide.com. Seriously, what do you expect from a spoiler section of a website?
Maybe this is why Ben kept saying that every living person on this island will be killed. He intended to kill them, to keep the island safe once the freighties landed.
sorry about the multiple posts but I just keep thinking about this. Ben says "these people are a threat" perhaps implying that this is why he's going to have to gas the island. I think Ben is intending on doing the killing, but he's making the Losties think it's the freighties that are the murderers. But, in keeping with his less than truthful manner, he never says specifically that the freighter people will be doing the killing, just that everyone on the island will die. This may be why he wants Alex to get as far away as possible. Maybe he'll slip her a gasmask, but he can't do it yet because that would tip off the other Others who he intends to let die like everyone else.
I like the idea that it was Ben planning to kill them all along, it would be a classic Lost twist.
Ok, here's my guess. I think there is some sort of trigger that would automatically activate. Perhaps it can only be controlled by the hatch Dan and Charlotte are headed to. This could explain Ben's actions as of late. He realizes that while captive, there is nothing he can do to save his daughter, hisself, the "others". I don't think he would intentionally gas the "others." Normally, he could send Richard, Tom, or Pickett to deactivate it. But Tom and Pickett are dead and Richard is going to the temple. Now Ben has no way of helping himself but to manipulate Locke. That's bad for Locke. I'm guessing he's going to lose.

Very possible. But what I think is even more possible is that Ben is planning to gas everyone which is why he's sending Alex to the Temple with Richard and then he will blame it on the freighties.
There was a redshirt who gave an interview during the strike and he said that a lot of redshirts will soon get killed.
I also agree with those who believe the 4 on the helicopter (and Naomi) were dumped on the island to get killed, but not before they complete their mission. I think these 4 have no ties to whatever organization (Widmore?) wants to take over the island but they all wanted to go to the island for some reason so they used them in order to complete a mission.
Miles: He wants to talk to Jacob and understand something about his abilities.
Charlotte: Has knowledge of the DHARMA Initiative and wants to learn more about the island.
Dan: Is interested as a scientist in how the island can bend time.
Frank: Feels guilty for the pilot's death and wants to help the other passengers of 815.
This totally ties in with Ben's 'every living thing on this island will be killed' and 'history will repeat itself' lines from Through the Looking Glass. He's referring to another purge, another gas attack.
Now the only question is, are Daniel and Charlotte really trying to prevent it? And are they following or disobeying orders in doing so?
Going out on a huge limb here but could this ultimately lead to a reason why only 6 of them get off the island? And why they are so pissed off/in denial of how many survivors there were [Jack in court]....
probably not but...who knows!
chris I have been wondering about that too for some time now. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone was killed on the island and Ben rescues a few people and then blames it all on the "Economist".

Probably thats the reason why jack wants to go back - not only back to the island but back to the past and to change it right before everybody gets killed. But than again, why doesn´t kate wants to get back? what would be the consequences of changing the past?

I think that Good and Bad are not completely black and white. I think Ben would easily gas anyone on the island who is there for purposes that are not in the Islands best interest. This was DHARMA. They were there for noble reasons, but not what is best for the island. They were trying to change fate through science. I am convinced that the Island is pure faith. Ben has sorta been playing both sides of the crowd. That is why Locke is there now. Above, someone talked about would Ben gas his own daughter? For the Island....yes. It takes that kind of commitment. BTW Dark, I am wondering. If I don't want to look at or read spoilers, I should go to the section that is titled SPOILERS right? LOL....You totally rock Dark! Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Obviously I'm here because I like spoilers, but I don't like all the spoilers. I was simply trying to clarify what others were saying that these post produxtion spoilers should be behind the tags like the normal full synopsis' are.
Melissa and Dark, if your argument is that I'm in the spoiler section so why complain, then I ask you why put the synopsis behind tags at all?
All I'm saying is that even though this isn't the full synopsis, the episode is still being blatantly spoiled...only slower.

I still don't believe the 4 that entered the island know their true purpose of coming to the island. They believe they're there for Ben, but I think it's just obvious that each of them were sent to island because they have ties to the island and can help exploit it, except maybe Frank who I think was purposely sent as the pilot because he knew about the cover-up.
As someone has already stated though, I believe that want Ben said about that everyone on the island will die is possibly true. Ben will kill everyone who enters the island to stop them from gaining control of it.

There is a difference between full episode synopsis and "spoilers". Some people prefer not to be totally spoiled, hence the "are you sure" buttons. So if this were from a different source, would you expect it behind a button? Yes, this episode is being spoiled. That is what most of us come here for. Some sort of spoilers. This isn't Dark's press release site, it's a spoiler site. This topic seems to come up a lot lately and I guess I just don't understand why anyone comes to a spoiler site and then are shocked when they find out something about an epi. If all you want is press releases, why not just go to abc? Not trying to be rude, I just don't understand.
Bob: There is a MASSIVE difference between these snippets and the full episode synopsis.
Once all these 7 snippets have been released there will at most be 10-15 lines of spoilers. A full episode synopsis has over 300.
If you can't stomach these spoilers then this section is NOT for you.

Maybe it's just because Daniel is involved...but I think the newbies have good intentions during that scene where Juliette has them at gunpoint. Someone has obviously briefed them both on the consequences of failure, hence Charlotte's 'you'll have to shoot us both' line. That's pretty heavy. What kind of consequence could inspire such boldness?

I think the original poster made a good point, even though he is getting gang-pounced here. If you organize all these little snippets into one post, it would basically be a complete episode synopsis, pre-show which would be put behind a secret button. So it stands to reason that the snippets should each be behind buttons.
I'm not really criticizing Dark, just a difference of opinion on what constitutes a bigger spoiler, in this case I think he is wrong but overall he has handled these types of things extremely well so this amounts to a nitpick.
However as for the audience, I am always amazed at the obnoxiousness of the responses on this topic. "whiners," etc. Why not respect some people's wishes to read mild spoilers but not big ones in general?
Dark recognized this preference by including buttons to hide bigger spoilers. So how hard is it to click a little button that you have to whine about it and call people names if they don't share your spoiler preference?
They don't want a repeat of what happened in Man Behind Curtain.....so whoever sent them to the island knows what sick ways ben will go to protect the island.....my guess is that maybe its the cerebus vents (not used for the monster)....cerebus could be a gas!!!!
What I don't and never EVER will get is why people think they have the right to tell Dark how to run his site. I understand some might not want to be spoiled but if you know there's a chance you good be, gee I don't know why but something tells me you shouldn't go on a site that has "spoiler" in the freaking title......and again, this is Dark's site, HIS to set up the way he wants. I completely agree... Harper says in the flash that everyone on the island will die if THEY (freighters) release the gas... but that's not their plan. Ben probably knows that Juliet will do or believe anything to get off the island, so she's an obvious one to use (and my bet is he also wants her to break some of her *ahem* close ties with the losties too

as a lost blogger and a fan that does NOT like MAJOR spoilers i can understand what you mean....
on my blog i try to differentiate a major spoiler from a minor one...but so does dark, thus the "are you sure" buttons...
everyone has a different level of what constitutes a spoiler...and it is very difficult for us to sometimes pick that line...
for example some people even feel that episode TITLES are spoilers or ABC promos are spoilers while many including myself do not...
so it is impossible to pick that point of when a spoiler is too far or too big....
dark is KNOWN for spoilers...and so when i even link back to dark's site via my blog if i feel one of my readers MIGHT be spoiled via a comment or ANOTHER spoiler post...then post a general link to protect the reader...
thus, when visiting this section of the site....you need to be aware that you are here to be spoiled....something behind a button does not mean it is still not a spoiler...
it just happens to be DARK'S rule or guideline for the site...and where HE draws the line...
since it is his site we have to accept it...
now if you are recommending he change that, perhaps your point would be valid if there were several other readers out there that felt this was a MAJOR spoiler...however it seems like there must be only a few of you that feel that way....
i guess you have to just be careful what you read...

Guys...I was merely suggesting these be put behind spoiler tags. I've been reading them thus far on my own accord but I'm pointing out that normally these spoilers would be behind the tag because they are from post produxtion. The only difference here is that they are one at a time rather than the whole thing like always. Thats it.
